“I’m already in the process.”

The omelette’s been spilled into the pan on the stove downstairs-- and the stove isn’t on yet, though it will be soon. She just had to check on Fiona, last and only other person in the house, had to be sure she was okay. The kids are in school-- Alana’s very on top of that-- and this is the final Gallagher in need of her help for the day.

For the day.

“I did make the omelette. I made the fallacious assumption you could hold it down. --Not so good. Come on, the shades are drawn downstairs, let’s put something in your stomach.”

All’s quiet on the Western front. (And how rare is that? The silence. How rare is it that everyone’s either in bed or not home yet for the night? How rare is it that nothing is broken? How rare is the quiet, how rare is the sound of crickets someplace outside, somewhere on the lawn?)

All’s quiet. Alana’s sitting outside on the stoop in a lawn-chair and there’s a glass of white between her fingers-- that’s a lie, it’s a mug, and it says World’s Best Dad, and the arm is chipped, but the white wine is, at least, good.

She admits the Gallaghers never fail to be a challenge, and they never have. It’s exactly what she needs-- to be challenged. To feel like she’s pushing for something. To succeed where others fail. To go forth, to go. She needs to feel wanted, needed. And being back here is easier, somehow. She’s needed.

She’s a chameleon, now-- tall cowboy boots and a red sweater, hair loosely woven, not totally waved, black leggings over surprisingly long legs for one so short. She acclimates, adjusts, changes to where she is.

She still somehow holds that mug of wine like it could be remotely dignified.

Allison turned to look at him with a worried expression. She knew this was coming. The words she said to Scott hjad been engraved on Isaac’s mind and although he pretended not to care, the huntress somehow knew those memories still haunted him.

He hadn’t wanted to say anything, he didn’t think he could stand the pain of having her confirm what he knew to be true, that he wasn’t Scott, that’s he’d never be Scott and that he was an absolutely terrible replacement for the alpha in question, but he’d been unable to stop himself saying something forever and her words did nothing to assuage the feeling of not being good enough. She deserved better than him. She deserved Scott. 

        “It’s different. I’m not him, I know that.”
