Highwood Craft Beer Fest: And the winners are...
August 2nd we took part in the 2014 Highwood Craft Beer Fest and finally got to see Stout fulfill one of our many goals: a craft beer event judging app. Simply put, the day was incredible and we had lots and lots of amazing brews.
30 Breweries, over 80 beers later. Drum roll please...
1st Ten Ninety Imperial Witbier by Ten Ninety Brewing Company
2nd Buckledown Fiddlesticks by Buckledown Brewing
3rd Wyders Reposado Pear by Wyders Cidery
4th Hopalicious by Ale Asylum Brewing

6th Lake Effect Kuhler See by Lake Effect Brewing
Huge thanks to all the breweries for taking part in our voting, and the Highwood Craft Beer Festival and Finch's Brewing for inviting us to be apart of everything.
How'd we do it? Punk rock!
We've tried to get a few smaller craft beer events together in the past, but nothing really worked out. To be honest, our app was barely able to handle the task. One could argue it wasn't ready, but in the spirit of the legendary Ramones, we could've stayed in a garage perfecting this thing forever, or just go out there and pretend to be rockstars.
Where to start?
First we thought, "We don't have a lot of time, lets just hack something together," but the reality is, we're an incredibly small development team. One person. If we were going to take the time to develop something, it should be meaningful to Stout and our community. So we decided to start working on a hugely requested feature we’d had on the back burner for a while: Lists. Everything you saw was being powered by a very early prototype of our upcoming Lists feature. So get pumped.
The Plan
So we went to work and coded up a simple List schema in our database with one List entry. This List would hold the beers and relevant data for the Highwood Craft Beer Festival. We then made sure all the breweries at the event were in our database, with the thinking that any beers could be quickly added at the Event. We've already setup a pretty quick and simple system for inputting beers not already into our database via the App (If you haven't tried our "Never Miss a Beer" feature, check it out, it's pretty sweet). So we threw a quick "Add to List" button on our own personal versions of the Stout app with the plan of getting to the Festival early, and running around making sure each beer was added to the List. Simple, right? Luckily, with our small team, we split up and managed to get all 70+ beers listed into Stout just 30 minutes into the Fest.
For anyone sans-iPhone, we also built a special mobile website so everyone could take part in the action.
Wrapping up
On top of a new mostly untested feature, we had shirt designs, koozie designs and printing to get done before the shenanigans. The koozies got taken care of super quickly, however the shirts were quite a struggle. Thanks to the fury of our CEO, we wound up barely getting our t-shirts just a day before the festival. 2 print designs, 1000 koozies, 5 t-shirts, a mobile website of all the beers for our non-iPhone friends and many many beers later, we made it. We would ultimately spend every day coding and working up until the morning of the Highwood Craft Beer Festival.
Was it worth it? Fuck yea, it was worth it.
I'm incredibly proud of our small team of misfits. The event was a huge success. Not just for us, but for the Fest goers, the Breweries, the Festival and everyone involved. We had an absolute blast, and we're super pumped we got to meet so many new Stout users face to face. You guys checked in a lot of beers, and we're going to be busting our asses to continue building out these features. I assure you, this List will not be like any other Beer list you've seen before.
Thanks for coming out, we hope to see you at our next event: the Midwest Brewers Festival on August 23rd.
