Life and the world he endured was brutally brief and cruelly unjust. In the scant years Custas had drawn breath, tragedy after tragedy had piled upon him without mercy. His fingers clenched white knuckled around the veils, fresh tears threatening to breach his lashes. He scrubbed at his eyes with his sleeve and forced out a shaky breath. Weeping would change nothing. It would not drag his father back from the wretched unlife that now claimed him.
Bracing on his augmented wooden legs, he stepped out into the open air, hoping the chill might steady his frayed nerves. It still astonished and enraged him that magic remained a jealously guarded privilege, reserved only for those born to its luxury. In his eyes, anyone granted the power to spare the living from agony and death held a duty to wield it. Yet those damned Pointed Cap Witches preferred to clutch their gifts close rather than ease another’s suffering. What a different world it might have been, had magic been free for any hand willing to shape it.
His bitter thoughts shattered as a fierce gust of wind struck him… followed by a sudden, searing light.
A fierce gust kicked up around him, the wind seeming to congeal at the crest of the hill. The current grew so violent it nearly tore the interlocking woven brim of his cap from his head. His eyes widened. He had never felt magic like this before. True, he had only been studying the craft a scant few months, yet ever since beginning he had grown sensitive to its essence and this presence felt otherworldly.
Channeling his flight spell into his augmented limbs, he shot upward into the air and looked down just as the wind funneled into a single point… then erupted outward in a restless, roaring surge. Had he not braced himself, the force would have hurled him clean from the sky. After steadying his balance, he peered downward.
A man stood below black-haired, appearing fairly young, yet carrying an almost ancient weight in his bearing.
Custas cautiously drifted lower.
“Hey… who are you? How did you get here?”
