I just figured out what I'm going to use all of my internet points for - to fund the third X-Files movie.
MoviePass: Chris Carter Says 'X-Files 3' Up To Fox & Wants Simon Pegg Involved
- firstshowing: Just over a year ago, David Duchovny expressed a desire to reprise his role as Agent Fox Mulder, and reunite with Gillian Anderson as Agent Dana Scully for a third big screen go round for The X-Files, the film franchise based on the Fox sci-fi TV series. However, there was no evidence that creator Chris Carter had anything in mind, and the actor indicated that Fox didn't seem to keen on a sequel after the second film X-Files: I Want to Believe, underperformed at the box office. Well, Carter recently spoke to Empire about the possibility of a sequel, and says, "It's really up to 20th Century Fox, whether they have the will to do it."
Carter is under the impression the whole gang wants to come back for The X-Files 3 too, saying:
"I think all of us are interested in putting the band back together. I have an idea for a third movie in my head. The colonization date has passed and that is something we wouldn't ignore. For the second movie, we only had the budget for a standalone story, but we want to go back to the mythology."
For fans not in the know, the colonization date is December 22nd, 2012, and that's when an alien invasion was supposed to take place. We're not sure how they would go about dealing with that plot point from the series, but an alien invasion could always happen in the third film, perhaps using the ancient calculation of time passing as an excuse for their arrival being later than the date suggested. Anyway, it doesn't sound like there are any solid plans for the film, but Carter has clearly been thinking about the story should the opportunity arise. Fans just need to make their demand known!
Speaking of fans, they might be happy to hear of a potential new cast member should the third film get off the ground. Sci-fi favorite Simon Pegg is very much on Carter's radar, and he would likely ask him to take a role if the film came together. Carter hasn't met Pegg (he also hasn't seen the series "Spaced" which is filled with X-Files references), but he recalled, "Gillian [Anderson] worked with Simon Pegg on a movie [How To Lose Friends And Alienate People] and told me that he was a big fan. We actually thought about putting him in the second movie, but there was no part for him. I certainly would think about him if we were to go forward in any way." It would be just one more sweet addition to Pegg's career which includes other big franchises like Mission: Impossible and the reboot of Star Trek. As for a third X-Files film, we won't hold out breath, but the truth is still out there, so we'll see what happens.
