Premium Tank Proposals : The Bernardini X1A and X1A2 , a Brazilian modernization conversion of the WW2-era U.S. M3A1/A3 Stuart light tank. During the 1970s, the Brazilian Army decided to find a way to modernize and keep the M1A1/A3 Stuarts they recieved from the U.S. during the 1940s, as opposed to simply selling them off to collectors and scrapping the rest. The task was handed to Bernardini which had prototypes ready in 1975 and 1977, with the design approved and intial production starting in 1979. Keeping the chassis of the M1A1/A3, the frontal and side armor were converted to slopped armor, and a newly designed slopped turret was mounted along with a new, and more powerful diesel engine that gave it a top speed of 55 km per hour. The turret was armed with a French DEFA D-921A 90 F1 90mm gun, that despite having low velocity was apparently adequate enough to deal with Soviet T-54/55s. It served with the Brazilian Army from 1979 to 1990s but hardly saw extensive combat. Many of you may already know about this rather interesting tank modernization. It’s more than likely been brought up in the WoT forums, and I know it’s been discussed in Warthunder forums. It’d be very interesting to in see the X1A2 in World of Tanks as a premium light tank. Knowing Wargaming, they’ve probably lightly floated around the idea putting it in the game too. It’d probably be a tier 7 American light tank. With a 90mm gun that is capable of taking on T-54s, and being able to fire 3 types of premium type rounds (HEAT, HESH, APFSDS), the X1A2 has too much firepower to be any lower than tier 7, and maybe tier 6. However, as it is essentially an modernized tier 3 light tank, it’s armor would not be adequate enough to be any higher than tier 7 as well. Given the precedent set by the M4A1 Revaloríse, an early French iteration of a modernized U.S. M4A1 Sherman, the X1A2 would probably have only slightly more hit point than it’s tier 3 basis, further making its survivability too low to be any higher than tier 7. It’s strengths would lie in its firepower and view range. It would have an average rate of fire, good armor penetration, and high alpha damage relative to the light tanks in its tier. With the ability to fire 3 premium type rounds, it would probably fire APFSDS or HEAT rounds be default, with the other option being either HEAT and or HESH rounds. It’s weaknesses would be average concealment, low hit points, and virtually no effective armor resulting in easily damaged modules and vulnerable crew. It would have average mobility, with only a top speed of 55 kph and a 300 hp engine. Gameplay wise, I’d say that it’d be suited to spotting, anti-light tank and anti-spg, fire support, and opportunistic attack. It could provide support for other tanks in the form of forward recon ahead of ally columns. Platoon it up with an M4A1 Revaloríse to get that modernized WW2 aesthetic you know you’ve always wanted.
