OC Fact Swap:
For as long as Aerena has been Sith, she has harbored very light-sided morals that would likely get her executed if she were found out. To help mask this, she uses a very dark-sided crystal in her lightsaber. Unfortunately, this has the side effect of her weapon behaving unpredictably and often dangerously towards her.
Her father was a fairly prominent Sith Lord as well, and was less than kind to Aerena all her life in an effort to instill the power of the Sith in her. He murdered her mother in front of her when she was a small child.
All this to say, the only time Aerena and her crystal have ever been in sync was when she killed him.
Xala puts her lightsaber through a lot. She makes it bleed when she can no longer control her overwhelming destructive emotions, so it goes from clear blue to crimson. She doesn’t try to hide it because by this point she’s already a disgrace to the Jedi Order. She even brandishes it for all to see: “Look, I’m doomed! I’m exactly what you feared I would become!” But she’s constantly in pain after the Emperor incident, and her kyber crystal feels every moment – it fractures. If someone Force-sensitive tried listening to it, they would hear nothing but screams.
