@xaldien I don’t have any problem with bad things happening to characters. My point was that I feel like Elliot’s story undercuts the thematic intentions of the episode. I can, and do, agree that his role in the episode works on both a character and plot level. But since I often approach stories from a theme first perspective, anything that doesn’t work for me thematically is going to rub me the wrong way. Like I was saying about Jane. I don’t love seeing the stereotype that mental health hospitals are bad places perpetuated in fiction, but everything that happens to her is thematically resonant with what I saw to be the major themes of the episode (reality and meaning are all about perspective, truth can be subjective, and shared belief can shape reality) so it still works. Elliot’s story, to me, doesn’t just fail to support those themes but undercuts them completely. You don’t have to agree, but I’ll admit I take a bit of offense to being accused of being so shallow that I can’t accept bad things happening to someone in fiction.
