Desert Night Lizard Xantusia vigilis

A night lizard native to the Southern California Eastern Sierra and the San Gabriel Mountains into Baja California, Nevada, Utah and areas of Arizona. During the day, it frequently may be found in rock crevices or under fallen plant debris. It is usually associated with varieties of yucca such as the Joshua Tree, Spanish Dagger, and Spanish Bayonet.

ヨアソビトカゲという大変に趣に溢れた名が付いた一群のトカゲの内、最も派手な種。名前の通り正しく御影石を思わせるカラーリングだが、テンションの高いときのあのギラつきは、かの石と言うよりは最早水面に浮いた油膜を思わせる。

野生下ではその名の通り花崗岩に貼り付いて生活をしていて、日中の気温の高い時間帯は岩の割れ目や下に潜り込み、日が沈むと這い出して夜遊びを始める。アメリカ大陸はヤモリに関しては大分貧しいところだけど、その代りこのようなトカゲが生まれてきたのだから、やはり石灰岩花崗岩の力は偉大と言わざるを得ない。
