Wanda would be lying if she said that she didn’t enjoy staying in the highlands. Steve had suggested the safe house there as an appropriate place for Wanda to stay until they had a more concrete plan, sensing she needed time alone. Wanda enjoyed walking through the hills and the cold reminded her of Sokovia. She enjoyed the little flat above a bookshop, cosy and welcoming. And above all, she enjoyed the time to heal and reflect and feel safe.
She’d been searching the pantry for some paprika when she’d heard a noise in the living room, shuffling. Putting back the jar of thyme, she tightened her fist and turned back towards the door to the kitchen. Beyond the door was a small hallway that led to the living room and her bedroom. Beginning out of the small larder, she grabbed the knife she’d been using to slice vegetables and held it to her side as she slowly crept towards the living room. Her heart pounded in her ears, wondering who the intruder was and more importantly, what they wanted with her. Steve had promised that nobody knew about this place...
Finally arriving at the doorway, she clenched the fist holding the knife in her hand, ready to attack if necessary. The moment she saw her would be attacker, her grip on the handle loosened so much that she nearly dropped it. “My god.” She gasped as she corrected herself before the knife could slip through her fingers. Placing the knife aside on the end table, she began across the room.
She didn’t ask how he’d found her, or what he was doing here, or how everyone was, or how much she’d missed him. Instead, she took his face in her hands, tears welling up in her eyes when her flesh met his as confirmation that he was real. Moving onto her tip toes, Wanda placed her lips against his and tried her best to convey every single emotion through the kiss. Words would never do it justice.
