Something that's sort of bugging me RE: the sexualization of the RWBY characters--
I really like it when a show has a female protagonist who isn't overly sexualized, because it's refreshing and a change of pace and to be blunt, it's what media needs. Women need to be broken free of that mold that they can be anything-- but also have to be sexy.
I also actually don't mind if a show has a sexualized female protagonist either. Fanservice doesn't bother me even though I know we need more nonsexualized female protagonists. Can it be gross sometimes? Yeah, and when it starts being gross I stop liking it. The skimpy armor in Kill La Kill is ridiculous and funny, but the rapey overtones are not. That's why I don't like the show.
But how do I reconcile these two things: I take great delight in the fact that RWBY is PG, and doesn't overly sexualize the girls, while also really enjoying the smut that the fandom produces.
You have to also consider that the stuff that this fandom in particular makes, is REALLY different from the sort of male gaze garbage you see in fanservicey media.
Fanart is usually two characters who are in love and want to make each other happy. Fanservice would be like.....a close pan up under Ruby's skirt during an unrelated battle scene, to reveal her underwear clinging so tightly to her nether bits that you can see the outline of her lips.
Do you feel me?
Another thing--
The kind of fanart that is male gazey and objectifying and gross, that turns them into objects to be acted upon rather than someone who happens to be sexual? Is almost never made by the kind of fan who wants and loudly asks for more nonsexualized female protags.
Some thoughts from my friends when I brought it up who'll remain nameless unless they ask otherwise:
we express ourselves and our desires through characters and settings through fandom, but that doesn't mean we want the original medium sexualized
Like on a different note, take RWBYquest. I sure as hell don't want Nora and Pyrrha being turned into surrealist monsters or Ruby constantly drenched in the blood of her friends, but whoever runs that tumblr has made a super-compelling narrative using pieces of the RWBY universe.
It doesn't have to translate over to the show itself.
Because the show is something showed to the world with influence as opposed to individual expression?
I mean, fandom has its circles and we support each other, but we're not being paid to present a girl-centric narrative to everyone who goes to RT.com

male gaze reduces the women into objects
vile smut--while it CAN do that if written poorly, is just. exploring another facet of a relationship

I see so many confused teenagers post/ask me things that boil down to something like
"I want to be a good person, but I don't know where to draw the line between considerate and doormat."
And it's because when you get down to it there are no hard and fast rules.
It's not a bad thing to stand by what you say, and do what you want, and be who you are. You should speak with conviction and act with conviction and move forward and be strong and not let others affect you.
But there is also nothing wrong with admitting you were wrong and acknowledging that who you were yesterday might not be who you are tomorrow, or that you want to change, or maybe that you NEED to change.
These two things exist at the same time, and though they seem to contradict each other, they don't, not really.
YOU need to learn how to balance them and figure out when they both come into play. That's part of what being an adult is, and it's different for everybody.
