Once you have reached beyond the dream sequences, you will know this when you have clear visions while awoke, instead of only visible when you're asleep. When you develop a certain level of "law of attraction” and more etc... You then possess a thicker border around your spiritual realm, the thicker the sturdier. (harder to break). No matter what position your senses are, whether it is from the past life, future, or present, each portal has its own unique shape and purpose. 

Xmen for example - Mutants has their own special abilities. It is more natural for these characters from experience and schooling. Marvel has costumes for different portals. As long as they are equipped for action they are powerful.
