Xiaomi Teases Entry-Level VR Headset for $0.15
Xiaomi is making an entry-level VR headset, and developers can buy a pre-release version of it for just $0.15.
Called the Mi VR Play, Xiaomi's device is smartphone-based, like the Samsung Gear VR$82.00 at Amazon. It's aimed at the mainstream Chinese market, and Xiaomi says that after issuing a call for beta testers there on August 1, it received 1 million registrations in just eight hours.
There's no word on the final price or when Mi VR Play will be sold to the public, and we also don't know whether or not Xiaomi plans to bring it to the US. The Chinese company is known for its cheap but mostly well-made products, and it has brought a few wearables and accessories to the US market, though the bulk of its sales remain in Asia.
The Mi VR Play uses a zipper to hold a smartphone in place, instead of the clips Samsung uses. It's compatible with handsets whose screen size ranges from 4.7 to 5.7 inches. On the outside, it's wrapped in lightweight, durable Lycra fabric, which Xiaomi eventually plans to offer in a variety of colors and styles.
