“I’m not afraid of — what?” Haku responds with a laugh, but the hand dabbing blood from Lee’s senbon wound twitches away from his skin as if burned.

Afraid? Lee thinks he's afraid to get to know him? How? The pair have been hanging out for a few months now, ever since their group PT at the hospital ended and they'd decided to just... keep training together when their schedules lined up. Haku's mind starts spinning, hunting through his past interactions with Lee for signs of friction and coming up empty.

Haku sits back on their heels, darting a questioning look at him, then resuming their patch-up job on the other shinobi. “Lee, I’m— confused. Why did you say that? It's not like—” Their fingers are a bit clumsier than usual; probably because Lee had to reset their shoulder thanks to a particularly powerful roundhouse kick. It's not like Haku's hiding things from Lee, if that's what he's suggesting. Because he isn't. Friends don't hide from each other. And Haku is a very good friend.

Haku laughs at Lee’s good jokes and groan at his bad ones. Haku asks about Lee's dreams, and Lee shares his ambitions. And when Lee asks Haku's about his own desires, Haku...

His rabbit-quick mind slows to a halt. What? What has he told Lee?

His name. Duh. How he came to Konoha from Kiri— unavoidable, considering Lee met him in the hospital after Wave. Haku presses his lips together grimly and ties Lee’s bandage a bit tighter than necessary. “I’m an open book, Lee,” he says, turning away to tuck his medical supplies back into his pouch. “If there's something you want to know, you can just ask."
