Mogwai - Xmas Steps
Merry fucking Christmas everyone!
12 Days ‘Til Christmas - Day 10 is Mogwai
Back in the late 90s Scottish Post-Rockers Mogwai were one of my favourite bands. And while I try to check out their new stuff from time to time I don't think it will ever capture my heart, head and imagination the same way as their first few albums and EPs did. So it is back to the 90s we must head for Day 10 and their epic instrumental number "Christmas Steps." There is actually 2 distinct versions of this song- the version from 1998's 'No Education = No Future (Fuck The Curfew) EP' is called 'Xmas Steps' and the recorded version on the following years 'Come On Die Young' album is called 'Christmas Steps'. It is the latter version that the video takes its audio from but it is arguable that 'Xmas Steps' is slightly better: longer, rawer, edgier and of course earlier.
Keeping on a very literal festive theme Mogwai also have a short song called 'Christmas Song' from the same period. Check out a video for it below
Xmas Steps - Mogwai
Xmas steps was originally from the No Education = No Future Fuck the Curfew ep and later reworked for the Come on Die Young album, this version is the former. The Cody version has the better starting section but for the purpose of this playlist I chose the earlier version.
This was a favourite of mine from the early days of Mogwai. This was even played at the first gig I saw them when they supported Manics at a leisure centre in Port Talbot in 1998. It was an odd gig. I was blown away by Mogwai, I didn't even know that this sort of music existed at the time. The quiet bits were melodic and beautiful, the loud bits were so effing loud. In what's now become a bit of a post rock cliché, they were the first band I saw who left the stage with everything on and feeding back. Then Manics came on and were pretty terrible, this was just before TIMTTMY so it's understandable.
We drove away from the gig playing the Holy Bible at full volume.
the ultimate mogwai fan question: Xmas Steps from No Education ep or Christmas Steps from CODY
