Natalia was born in Stalingrad, Soviet Union, in 1954, to a full house: both her parents (Igor and Filippa), her grandmother, aunt, two cousins, and three brothers that came after her. Her grandfather perished in the war, where he’d fought with both her uncle and her father. They were a dysfunctional, unhappy family to say the best. As both her cousins and her brothers were all men, Natalia was the only female child, and was put in charge of the household activities and responsible for her grandmother, and frequently abused by her cousins. By age 7, she started fighting back, hitting her cousins when they crossed a line (despite how horribly they beat her later and the punishment that was administered by her parents), cursing, stealing to put bread on the table and stealing books from the library. The thing she wanted most was to learn, so Natalia (Natashenka, as she was called then) picked apart anything she could get her hands on and built it back up. Her interest for the sciences was mocked by her family and her peers, but it caught the eye of the KGB.
After the second Red Scare, the KGB was running low on recruitments, so they started grabbing young teenagers and children. A soldier had heard of the cunning, stubborn, amazingly intelligent spitfire of the Kozlov child, and when Natashenka was 13, the KGB offered her somewhere where she could thrive. And thrive she did. Her mutation of intuitive aptitude manifested and developed without her noticing, so she picked up languages faster than anyone, could assemble and disassemble whatever she desired, helped design weapons, and two years later she was already taking down men twice her size without breaking a sweat. She was one of the youngest agents to be put on the field, and earned the respect from everyone around her through much effort, but where she truly found herself in the espionage field.
When she was 23, Agent Kozlova took on the codename of Liho, then was sent to America under the alias of Daisy Moore, as a long-term sleeper agent, a role she performed flawlessly, going as far as marrying a clueless American whom she came to love. Five years later, horrible news reached her: both her parents and her cousins had been convicted to a Gulag. As horrible as her home life had been, Natalia still loved her young brothers and grandmother dearly, knew they had no chance to feed themselves all on their own. Right under the KGB’s noses, she started sending her family anything they could sell in the black market, from caviar to jewels. That went on for three years, until the KGB found out the illegal activity, but they did not have identity confirmed on the traitor. Well-aware she was running out of time, Natalia took a desperate measure: she turned herself in to the CIA. She told her husband, of course, causing him to leave immediately.
In exchange for information, the CIA promised to help her bring her brothers and grandmother to America. To be fair, they did their best to uphold their end of the deal, but their plan was found out first. The boat her family was in, already on their way, was blown to pieces. When the news reached Natalia, she broke. Her body was taken over by convulsions, her head seemed to be split in half, and she caused a power outage in the city she was in as well as in the two neighboring ones.
Natalia was 31, a Soviet defector, a spy without a mission, a recent divorcee, and to top it all off, a mutant.
The CIA was clueless as to what they should do. There was no denying she was an asset – an invaluable one, at that – but the mutation was a problem. She needed to get it under control, and so she was sent to Xavier’s, where she could transfer her knowledge to young students and learn how to control her newfound power.
Currently, she’s facing an identity crisis: she’s no longer Natashenka, Natalia, Agent Kozlova, Liho, Daisy Moore nor Daisy Campbell. A part of her wants to make her new life as Daisy, leave the Soviet Union behind and Natalia behind, but another part can’t fully let go of the past. Maybe, since she’s found out she’s not even entirely human, it’s time to get a name makeover as well.
