After the Crash

It wasn’t supposed to happen like that. International flights didn’t just lose control of two engines and plummet from the sky; nor did they crash into the ocean and crack in half, rendering the inflatable slides basically unusable. Most passengers had been too panicked to remember where their life vests were, let alone get them put on and inflated before a massive wave filled the cabin. It was night, and the plane sunk so quickly. It was unlikely that anyone survived.

Yet, when Willow awoke on a moss-covered shore sometime around noon the next day, still soaked-through from the long night of floating towards land, she saw someone else lying on the beach merely ten feet away. Still exhausted, she crawled over to him, pushing him over to lay on his back. He was still breathing.

"Hey," she croaked, her throat raw from salt water rushing down and back up it. "Wake up, come on. You’re okay."
