This is a new painting (top three paintings in post) of a young xochihua person, or “possessor of flowers.” The xochihua are a third gender, who are neither male nor female, but have characteristics of both. They wear a set of regalia I designed, which gives honor to the xochihua experience. They wear both a skirt (a female-gendered garment) and a maxtlatl or loincloth (which is gendered male), to show that they are in-between, and partake in both aspects of existence. Their skin is painted yellow, a color associated with women and female beauty, and Xochipilli, the lord protector of queer folk, is painted on their chest and embroidered on their maxtlatl. Their mouth is painted with a butterfly, which is a symbol of Xochipilli. Their hair is long, and fixed in a women´s style, with two “horns” at their temples. They sweep, which is a ritual activity strongly associated with women, and important in many ceremonies. I made this painting to celebrate pride month, and to illustrate the xochihua regalia I recently designed (and which I am currently making). It will be on display with @art in Berlin in July, together with the regalia! You can find it as a print in my Etsy shop:
