“You’re insane!” “Aren’t we all?” ~ Dream x Reader
Yea so I don’t write X reader because I really have no clue how to, but I saw @quackisinnit ‘s 1k event and wanted to participate so I did my best. (can be read as platonic or romantic, and male or female)
You honestly didn’t believe anyone when they had told you Dream had been placed in prison. Sure, the dumb green man you knew (and loved but don’t tell anyone) had his times, but so did everyone. You didn’t want to believe them when they told you what he had done.
“Hey, Sam?” You released the button, waiting for the crackle.
“Yup, y/n, come on through.”
You shivered as the purple swirled around you, leaving you in the other realm. You didn’t go out much, so travel through the portals was never really necessary for you. The downside of this, was teleporting through realms still left a foul taste in your mouth, but you swallowed it down, waiting for Sam’s cue before stepping through again.
He gave you a sympathetic smile as you retched, summoning a water bottle from his inventory and handing it over. You took it gratefully, water helping the bile down a little.
“Here,” he passed you the glowing book. “Read it aloud please.”
You recite the lines, signing where you were told, handing it back. Sam let you into your locker, and you emptied your inventory, emerging after not very long.
“Ready? Let’s go.”
You followed Sam step for step letting respawns happen, doubts barreling through your head like a freight train.
What on earth had Dream done? How did he end up locked up so tightly? Why were you so out of the loop?
“Sam,” you began hesitantly, struggling to straighten everything you wanted to ask in your head.
“What’s up y/n?”
“What did Dream do? Like exactly, how did he end up in here?”
Sam abruptly stopped, spinning on his heel and bending down slightly to make eye contact with you.
“Y/n, he did a lot of bad thin-”
“I know he did something awful,” you interrupted. “why else would he be in here? I want to know exactly what he d-”
“Y/n he tried to kill Tubbo!” His voice softened slightly, acknowledging the shock on your face. “He tried to kill Tubbo, he manipulated Tommy, he lied to and hurt many people.”
A moment passed, no noise but the dripping of crying obsidian and crackle of lava echoing through the empty prison. Sam sighed, placing a gentle hand on your shoulder, giving it a light squeeze.
“Y/n, I know it’s hard to believe, I know you don’t want to believe it. If you don’t want to see him anymore, I can take you back outside.”
You just shook your head in a simple no.
“I want to see him.”
The rest of the trip was made in silence, Sam nodding to you as the bridge moved under your feet, bringing you across the endless swarms of lava to the little obsidian box where a green man sat, waiting.
The platform had fully disappeared into the distance, and lava completely covered the entrance, leaving a orange glow over the whole room. Dream was studying you, you had realised, it made you uncomfortable. He was wondering why you had come.
“So, y/n…”
It was as you had remembered, the same honey dripping from his words, as the last time he had been in your cabin, right before you had thrown a blanket at his head and invited him to stay for the night.
Right before his face hardened and he said he had somewhere to be.
“This is where you had to go Dream?”
“Y/n-”
“No, you don’t get to talk right now.”
You took a deep breath, organising your anger very neatly before you exploded.
“You nearly killed Tubbo? Manipulated Tommy, Dream they are MINORS! Children! They don’t, shouldn’t have to face all this, least of all from you!”
“From me?” Dream interrupted, leaning forwards, interest on his face. “Oh do explain what you mean by that.”
“I…” your train had, again, spluttered to a halt, voice dropping to a whisper. “I thought I could trust you.”
“Y/n, y/n, you can trust me,” a crooked smile grew on his face, slight amusement in his eyes. “of course you can trust me, don’t you remember? Karoke, movie nights, the brownies?”
A sob grew in your throat, you were crying, you realised. This wasn’t supposed to be difficult, you were supposed to make peace, after what Sam had told you. Yet here you were, swallowing down sobs, choking back the tears as the memories flooded back.
“Y/n,” he extended his hand, curling his fingers slightly. “Help me escape.”
For a second you imagined what it would be like. Finding him a way out and running away with him, hidden away forever. That thought was very quickly banished when you saw the smile on his face grow deeper, more sinister. He thought he had you. No. You weren’t going to be manipulated, not now, not ever.
“You’re insane!”
He reached towards you, shrugging, a hint of desperation in his tone. “Aren’t we all?”
Your decision was made. As hard as it was, you moved away, standing by the lava.
“Perhaps. But I’m not going to be, not for you, never for you.”
You faced the lava, taking a deep, shuddering breath, trying to keep the tears to a minimum.
“SAM! I’M READY TO LEAVE NOW!”
“Y/n,” his hand was on your shoulder, and you were flung back into the pool of memory that you had just struggled to escape.
It felt right. But it was so very wrong. Shrugging his hand off, you ignored the tears marking your cheeks, spinning back to face him, as cold of an expression as you could muster.
“Dream, you had your chance. You threw it away. Goodbye.”
The last image you saw of him was shock, written clear as day across his face, and a second emotion, regret, as the barrier popped up to prevent him from escaping and you stepped onto the platform which would bring you away from him, forever.
