It had been a long eight and a half months for Maya Fey. Despite her status as the current Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique, she hadn’t channeled anyone since she discovered that she was expecting her second child. This had caused a great deal of stress in Maya’s career, because channeling was the main part of her job! The elders hadn’t minded her stepping back from channeling as much when she was expecting her daughter, as they had been pressing her to have an heir for many years at that point. The panel of twelve women aged between 60 and 95 hadn’t minded her second marriage, as she had wed the Chief Prosecutor, Miles Edgeworth. Having such a powerful connection to Kurain was invaluable.
However; Maya had noticed a significant difference in demeanor from the elders when she announced her second pregnancy. They weren’t nearly as ecstatic as they had been when she told them about her first pregnancy. If Maya was being honest with herself, she was a bit heartbroken that the Elders weren’t as happy as she was. She knew that her daughter was excited to have a sibling, that her husband was excited to have his first biological child. The opinions of twelve old ladies was the last thing that Maya cared about. They had their heir, so why did they care so much if she had more children? She wanted more than anything to tell them off. Of course, she couldn’t do that if she valued her career (which she did).
Despite everything she had been through, all of the constant travel between her shared home with her husband, Kurain Village, and her bimonthly visits to the Kingdom of Khura’in. All of the extra responsibilities she took on in place of channeling, her assistance with the rebuilding of the legal system in Khura’in, and maintaining her relationships with family and friends. It was almost too much, but with the support she received throughout her pregnancy, she made it.
Maya was excited. She was more than ready to welcome her baby into the world. She could hardly wait the two more weeks until her due date. What she didn’t realize when she woke up the morning of October 17th, was that she wouldn’t have to wait any more.
The medium woke at her normal time of 6AM, and made her way into the garden for her normal morning meditation. Unfortunately, she couldn’t focus on meditating, due to the periodic pains radiating in her abdomen. If she wasn’t mistaken, those pains could be contractions but it was too early for her to be having contractions. After about three hours of ultimately fruitless meditation, Maya decided to go inside and make some tea. She could always meditate later.
She was alone when she moved from the kitchen of Fey Manor into the half open dining area that looked out into the garden. She very gently took a seat on her mat and sipped quietly at her tea while looking outside at the falling leaves in the garden. It would be winter soon, so she took the moment to enjoy the bright colors of autumn.
