"Woah, hey. No need to be pointing a gun at some stranger."
Ashes to Ashes || Rick & Shane (xwhatwebecome)
It had been two days since he had been chased out of the house they were staying in by that group. It had been two days since they had started toward this place that promised a community, promised that everyone who arrived survived. They had traveled on those tracks for what seemed an eternity, stopping only for a short rest or for the night. They had camped out in the woods, in the open, the night before. He had hardly gotten any sleep, even though he knew Michonne was awake and keeping watch. He couldn't sleep with the sounds of crickets, cicadas, owls, and the constant threat of a group of walkers passing through. He had tried, though, and he had drifted off into a light sleep a few times, waking with a jolt whenever he heard movement or thought he had.
This day was different, however. As the day grew late, they crossed a small town that was just off the tracks they found themselves traveling on. Their weary legs couldn't carry them much further and the thought of spending another night in the woods wasn't all that appealing. The town appeared quiet enough - no other survivors, no walkers in view - so they found a two story building just off the tracks to call home for the night. They cleared the place and then secured, setting up camp once it was safe.
Rick let out a heavy sigh as he looked out the window, watching the empty street below. They had enough food to last them a few more days, but they were running low on water. They hadn't come across any creeks in their journey and it had been a good while since the last rain fall. If they were going to make it to this "Terminus" place, they would need water. They wouldn't be able to survive without it. He glanced back at Carl and Michonne, who were both camped out on the other side of the room talking quietly and then turned his attention back to the barren world outside. There's gotta be a convenience store around here or some homes with some supplies nearby, he thought to himself.
"I'm going out to get us some water, see what else I can find while I'm at it," Rick declared, his tone firm, absolute. Michonne and Carl both argued with him, reasoning it was something they could all do together in the morning. He wasn't swayed by this reasoning, however, knowing what little water they had left likely wouldn't last them the night. They offered to go instead, but he stood firm. His injuries hadn't prevented him from handling himself when that group entered the house. He could take care of himself and he was well aware of the dangers. Rick promised he wouldn't be gone long, that he would return before sunset, and that he wouldn't travel too far from where they were staying.
With that, he left on his journey, his primary goal to find water and food. He walked past a few boutiques that lined the street; he could feel the eyes of his son and Michonne watching him from the window of the building. He past a small gas station on the corner, but it was nothing more than a small building with a cashier stand and some pumps - nothing of interest. He cleared a few homes, killing a walker with his knife in one, and took the few bottles of water and food items he had found, placing them in his backpack.
Rick was on his way back to the building they were calling home for the night, having decided he had found enough water and food to last them a day or two, when he crossed a convenience store. He stood out on the road, staring at the dilapidated building; deciding whether he should enter or go on his way. Despite a little voice inside him that told him to keep going, he decided that it wouldn't hurt to check the place out, even though it had probably been cleaned out long ago. You never know, Rick thought to himself as he approached the building.
He stood before the door for a moment, peering through the glass doors to see what - or who - was in there. The place appeared to be clear, although that didn't mean it really was. He opened the door, wincing at the sound the bell made as he did. He stood there in the doorway for a moment, waiting to see if anything was going to greet him. When no walkers made their presence known, he slowly and quietly entered the building, drawing his weapon as he did.
Cautiously, Rick cleared the small store; checking first behind the counter and then down the aisles. He noted a few bottles of water and juice still left in the dead refrigerators that lined the side of the store and quickly removed them and placed them in his backpack. He headed toward the back of the store, stopping in his tracks when he thought he had heard something coming from the back of the store, toward the window. Perhaps he the place wasn't as clear as he had thought it had been. He mustered up the strength and made his way toward the back of the store, his Colt held in front of him. Carefully, he rounded the corner, making sure his Colt made it around before he did.
The sight of the man who now stood before him shocked him. It caused his rapidly beating heart to practically come to a full stop in his chest. He felt as though he had the wind knocked right out of him. Rick thought he had killed the man out on a field on the fateful night the Greene farm had been overrun. He had left his friend out there to die when he had seen the approaching herd. He had always known his old partner was a resourceful one, but it baffled him how he had managed to survive that.
"Shane..." Rick said, the confusion and surprise he was feeling inside not present in his tone.
