Karren is attending college pursuing a degree in music because (1) Nathanael and Arunolt both had an education, and (2) Nathanael and Arunolt both weren't sure she could do it. She kept bugging Nathanael. She bought a backpack and kept leaving it places around the house. And one day when she went to move it she found it filled with fake documents and several acceptance letters.
There is a clock in every classroom, and Karren has sensitive hearing. Sometimes when you walk down the hall and a lot of classroom doors are open and there aren't a lot of other sounds to cover it up, you can hear a lot of them, calling to you. She protested a lot when her brothers dared suggest she go around with a service dog, but having a furry neck to grab the scruff of makes all the difference, when she has to face that siren song of the clocks.
She can tell herself that the clocks can't hurt her, they're just things. But when she spots Arima himself, the CCG's most prized investigator, snooping around campus with his little flock of doves, that kind of thinking won't.... Arima will kill her. If he finds out what she is, he'll kill her. Are they here for her?? For some other ghoul??? For some... event... talking to students... about something...????
She's beyond grateful for the service dog when it licks her face and wakes her up, she must have fainted... oh shit there's no one else around, the doves are coming over... well she clearly has something wrong with her, she's got a dog...she has an excuse for telling them to keep their distance. She's so grateful for the dog, so grateful, it's incredible. How suspicious is it, exactly, for someone to faint after seeing the CCG's fucking white reaper unexpectedly? LOOK, THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG WITH HER, SHE HAS A DOG AND EVERYTHING! She can faint wherever she damn pleases, thanks very much...!!!
"Please don't touch me," she says, as politely as she knows how, sort of climbing up the dog into a sitting position. She starts fumbling for her phone. "I'll be alright, I'm going to call my brother, it's okay... please give me space, I'm not good with people, it's hard to be in public, I'm really sorry...I'll be okay..!"
