Aries, seeing a very pregnant Xena: “You on the other hand have been keeping yourself busy. I wish I’d have known you were looking for a father.” Xena: “I’m not.” Aries: “Oh. Well, somebody clearly got the job.” Xena: “Yeah, Gabrielle.”

Sometimes I really love this series.

Season 5! Here’s another compilation with my favorite Xena/Gabrielle moments! And while I commented on finding a bit less moments in season 4, this one barely made it over five minutes, and that’s keeping some clips that I would probably have deleted if it had been another season, while all the other compilations have been around ten minutes. Funny thing is, the first time I watched this season I was so happy to have a bit of an overarching plot again, and loved the whole “Gabrielle loves Eve as her own daughter” thing so much (as well as the moment Xena tells Ares that Gabrielle’s the father) that I somehow missed how much Xena seems to push Gabrielle away. Sure, there’s her almost leaving Gabrielle in Kindred Spirits, but more than that Xena seems dismissive of Gabrielle’s love for Eve on several occasions, I’m starting to really understand the general dislike I’ve noticed for season 5. Well, at least I know season 6 will be better (and ends with them flying off over the sea on Gabrielle’s birthday).

Livia

That is the face of a mother who just found out that, while she was stuck on ice for 25 years, her daughter became everything she’d hoped she would never be, a warrior, ruthless and cold...

...and that she has a terrible hair style.

The end of season 5 is amazing.

Seriously, a pie throwing fight?

The worst part is that I was actually amused. And since it was the last episode before Lucy Lawless gave birth, I can understand why they went for something more relaxed.

Antony and Cleopatra

That is the face of a woman who has to watch her wife aggressively seducing a man for a con, being perfectly aware that her wife is falling for him as well, while playing a part that requires her to stay perfectly neutral. Also featured: the face of a woman who is really concerned whether the plan to avenge her late queen will work.

Also, am I the only one who feels uneasy by the extent to which Xena uses seduction and sex as a tool in this plan? I mean, she seduces Ares so he will help her in Amphipolis under siege, but there is a strong “she’s tried everything and this is the very last option” feeling there, while here her first plan is to hide in a carpet to be delivered, perfectly naked save for a bunch of chains, to Marc Antony.

Also I was looking forward to seeing Cleopatra again (they actually cast a black actress as Cleopatra!) and then she dies in the very first scene...

XWP 5x01 (spoilers)

So, Xena and Gabrielle died, and then got better. I don’t quite know what to make of the heaven and hell episode in the middle. (I’m ignoring the modern setting episode. It doesn’t exist.) It was fun, it’s just so strange to suddenly have a christian afterlife, when in the past it was established that Gabrielle would end up in the amazons’ afterlife and I would have expected Xena to end up with Hades, hopefully in the Elysean Fields. Still, besides the slight feeling of suddenly being in a completely different series, it was fun. The new Callisto, however... I was so happy to have her back in Ides of March, and she was so much fun as a demon (I bet Hudson Leick had a lot of fun with that part.) And Xena sacrificing herself to save her soul was so fitting and heart wrenching. But the good Callisto doesn’t really seem to fit, I would have expected her to keep her playful side for example, here she seems bland and not really human. I mean, she’s not, but you know what I mean.

Looking Death in the Eye

I’m going through season 5 again for my next compilation video, and though I usually only watch a few passages I slowed down for Looking Death in the Eye, because it’s a great episode. But I keep on wondering... Why didn’t Joxer just go to Ares and ask him where he buried Xena and Gabrielle? After all, he’s their friend and it would not have been strange for him to want to pay his respects... And if Ares somehow refused to tell him, he could have even taken the risk of telling Ares the truth, after all, Ares has been trying to protect Xena and Eve.
