model updates.........will be sharing lessons learned........
last time i shared something in regards to this model was back in november of last year whoops
in addition to my love it or hate it mindset in regards to making art, i also need to add getting it done is better than getting it perfect
idk i know with art there are No Rules but there definitely are standards and i hope to meet them and i hope to push myself with every model but i often find myself just over focusing on something so ridiculous and then oops.... some months pass by when i should have gotten that done and over with months ago
i don't hate this model enough to give up on it and i know it's not perfect but i do love it enough to want to see it to be a full model and to just try. idk i still hate how my vtuber model looks in my icon so i'd like to do better
i definitely took too long trying to create hair for him. i think it doesnt matter what kind of hair it is, i struggle with creating it. i think short hair in particular is challenging in 3d. i wasn't sure how to approach the hairstyle i wanted but you have to make each strand different otherwise it doesnt feel like you're communicating that the character has a head full of hair. in this case, i also had to layer up in the back and i think the bangs are good, but i need to touch up the side + back more.
one thing i did was look at what some artists have shared on booth, but i think that wasn't enough so i looked at some 3d models from popular gacha in regards to how they approach short hair. one thing the two have in common, is that it is completely fine to like. straight up just shove or directly place one strand on top of another. you can see this in ardashir's game model in arknights endfield, directly in the bangs they just have loose strands growing from one root point and outwards. their models have a beautiful quality to them and they communicate out his fluffy hair well by making each strand ends different from each other
the only thing i was worried about is how to go about texturing/painting the hair but i think i'm straight up going to do what endfield does for their models that have short hair LOL. i'd really like to touch up the back as soon as i'm done writing this post because i still dont think it communicates out a head full of hair. it's almost there but i need to differentiate the strands more
here are some random videos i collected to help me think more about short hair + hair in general (not in english though sorry)

also literally, just look at real life references especially if you have a hairstyle in mind, look at some hairstylists pages or smth, and even look at some of the 3d models released today in video games
as for the body, i actually kinda like this a lot more than my initial model. it is important to remember that shapes on the body are not always so clean and it is not so flat and you have to constantly shape things out. i wanted to give him a more.... bara-like/muscle-like body type but i think i was biting off more than i could chew and i was afraid that it wasn't fitting his face. which i still like btw but i think in the future i'd like to take more time in shaping out the face, i feel like the face itself is too big and should match the rest of the actual head shape better but oh well. i'm sticking with it because it's better than my current model LOL. anyways i think for next time, i will commit more to a muscle-like body type like the ones you see from slayful gay japanese artists. in addition to me giving him this body type i also wanted to create some homoerotic works in the future yayyy
well anyways there's more work for me to do, i need to go back and start addressing his hair so that way i feel satisfied and i feel like i communicated his hair correctly. i wonder what kind of clothes i'll give him this time....
thanks for reading
