Sexypink - A gathering/conversation instigated by Christopher Cozier. “…In Trinidad, the art encounter and or transaction often seems to exist outside of historical trajectories with a fake and mysterious notion of universal standards or quality - can we question or just accept this?” Cozier Based on conversations which took place at Alice Yard over the last year, Christopher Cozier, rather than having a “one man” exhibition, invites artists Amir Denzel Hall, Bianca Peake, Elechi Todd and Khaffi Beckles, to open the conversation; to think about the meaning of making and process within and from our geographic location. Why Now? is an assembly of ways of working and ideas. Asking about collaboration, our art market space, local art history, how and why work is viewed and consumed. What are the degrees of consonance and dissonance? Why associate? Why share space? Why make art here? And Why Now?

Jana Zatvarnická in Studio. “My research traces the human history, heritage, and non-self-reflective anthropological framing. In my artistic process, I intend to capture the progress of my research on re-learning and re-archiving our "apparent " self-evidence and spiritual-historical processes in society by utilizing painting and installation as a medium. By using different tools and materials and embedding them into the chosen space I am creating “individual" mythology. In doing so I am leaving Traces. Thursday 21st April: Curator Melissa Miller interviews Dean Arlen, live on    Instagram.

Dean Arlen b. 1966. Based in Trinidad and Tobago, Dean Arlen is an installation artist, working both in the studio while proposing urban and rural social/cooperative art design installation/projects for communities. His studio work is influenced by people within their urban and rural environments.---“The work is persuaded by a constructivist methodology using machine technology, traditional knowledge and a keen reading of the socio-political landscape.I see the canvas surface as sculpting, building upon prior knowledge, carving, peeling, tearing-down to re-articulate a modern folkloric philosophy. The texture comes from tattered, peeled, rusted walls, a bureaucracy of infrastructure that has merged old-school craft styles with a modern aesthetic didacticism. The subjects in my pieces are influenced by gender fluidity/urban/national discourse in a deliberate attempt to challenge toxic masculinity, neoliberalism, and neo-conservative nationalist discourses.”-

Panty Man - Adele Todd 

Quilted blanket and dimensional embroidery thread . 81 x 65” 2021

As a Performance Artist who works with Embroidery and Soft Materials among other Media, the possibilities for DUALITY seemed endless. However, eventually I was moved to consider "Male Toxicity" as my theme.The word Panty Man that is done tongue-in-cheek in neon pink is the Title that sets the viewer on their path of discovery.The slang term is used to describe a man who is coddled and feminine in nature and a slur to homosexual men in particular.The work is a large dark blue quilt with embroidery threads that on closer observation create individual words that must be looked at at close range and also, can only be seen one at a time as they do not have a chronology. The viewer must move their own bodies to 'read' the piece.The quilt is a symbol of nurturing, safety and warmth. The loose threads that thus fall from the quilt symbolises the unravelling of that safety. We generally expect men to be 'men' and are unaware of how much our stereotyping of the male sex confuses boys as they grow to manhood. I hope that my piece shall inspire those who interact with it, the opportunity, to consider when they themselves have perhaps used terminology seen on the quilt or words to that nature to define a man's character. We are all guilty of a level of sexual politics for its own gain and must now consider that sensitivity is not a one way street.-Adele Todd

~Sexypink~Alex Kelly’s A Glassful of a Clear Liquid (Glasses individually titled)

Materials: Drinking glass, white rum, 5oz. Sinker.

This work stems from my ongoing contemplation of the nature and implications of privilege. Far from being a monolith, privilege exists as part of a vast set of varied and nuanced relationships. My own privilege only takes shape in relation to those who are less or more privileged that I. This of course is not based on any fundamental law of the universe, but upon ideas in which we continue to invest, even as those ideas may not be to our personal or collective benefit. The work uses the familiar to frame privilege, and the opposite positions it implies, as a concrete part of one's experience of the world, permeating every moment, every interaction. -Alex Kelly
