Hardware Review: Lenovo Ideapad Y510P

Once in a while a laptop comes around that completely blows you away. For me, Lenovo wasn't a name I really knew, aside from the 2002 mice and keyboards they used to have in the IT office and at work. Not something exactly impressive, but when I started googling inexpensive laptops that could deliver a powerful gaming punch, needless to say I was impressed.

It's said to never judge a book by its cover, but the Y510P looks very slick indeed. A black matte material encases it, making it look more like a stealth jet than a computer, complete with ridged edges. The side of the laptop contains an ultrabay on each side, housing the 755m Nvidia cards. Opening the lid, I was treated to the view of the gorgeous 1920x1080 resolution display, (which is always impressive on a laptop) and when I turned it on, the red backlit keyboard, which can be brightness adjusted.

The keys themselves are ever so slightly indented, letting your fingers fit that much more comfortably. Nice touch, Lenovo. The trackpad is a single surface one, and in all honesty is pretty terrible. Not a big deal though if you use a mouse, which you'll be most likely doing with this laptop anyway, given its gaming potential.

Speaking of gaming, this laptop does not disappoint in the slightest. All the games I've thrown at it so far run in high to ultra settings in 1080p at a rate of 45 frames or MORE. I've played Dishonored, Payday 2, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, even games like Farcry 3, Crysis 3 and Bioshock Infinite run smooth as butter on high settings at full resolution. League of Legends *never* drops below 60 frames, which is God's own blessing for a League nut such as myself.

You may be saying to yourself, gaming performance is great and all, but what about one of the PC gamer's biggest antithesis' when it comes to performance? It's what some consider to be the biggest problem of having an assembled computer with all the best parts and best processors: heat. The Y510P is no exception, and after just half an hour or so of the most intense gaming, the thing gets HOT HOT HOT. Seriously, its worth mentioning that its a better idea to place this laptop on a flat, cool surface like a desk, rather than on your lap. If you're of the male gender and plan on having children, definitely bank on the above advice.

This laptop runs very hot, the downside to having all the latest parts and a cooling system that can't be put into a laptop. I can't help the feeling that these parts would be best complimented with a liquid cooling system, rather than the ultrabay mounted fans this one has. The keyboard, leftmost side in particular starts to get hot after longer heavy use, and that's never comfortable.I've played heavy duty games for longer than two hours and the heat isn't so intense that it threatens the laptop's integrity or usability, but the machine definitely runs hotter than it ought to. I recently picked up a focused cooling pad to help manage the heat, and it's helped quite a lot in the respect that my fingers aren't uncomfortable on the keyboard.

Another nitpick I noticed almost immediately is the edge of the laptop is somewhat unsmoothed. This is where the upper part of your wrist would rest when resting on the w, s, a and d keys. It's not jagged enough to cut you, and you can run your finger along it without it cutting, but its rather rough compared to the rest of the laptop, which is very smooth.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this laptop is the future of gaming, and how well it will handle next gen games. With games getting more and more detailed and newer versions of game engines spearheading pc gaming into the future (I'm looking at you, Assassin's Creed Unity and Farcry 4) I'm confident that the Y510P will continue to be a contender in current gen gaming performance, as well as next gen.
