Oh my God, I got so angry when Peregrine yelled at Madam Rosmerta and scared her so bad she dropped her glasses and quickly left. This is the same woman who stood up against Rakepick so coolly too!
I got more angry at MC not standing up for her though. How can you stand idly by like that when this stranger who dares to call himself your "father" scares someone you have said before you care about this badly?
While I understand why people are upset about this scene, I’m mostly just… confused. Because it was artificial as hell.
First of all, Rosmerta was totally out of character, and I simply don’t believe she’d behave like this. As you pointed out, she had no problems standing up to Rakepick. We know she was bold enough to hide Jacob from Aurors. I don’t care how scary Peregrine is when he loses his temper – Rosmerta wouldn’t be this scared. Well, I guess she could be scared when he really loses his temper. But this one wasn’t even that bad, and I’m fairly certain it was only a glimpse of what Peregrine looks like under his façade.
And secondly, the whole situation was super absurd. I mean, we had this at first:
And then Peregrine snaps:
But like… No bartender or waiter would act like that, ever.
Rosmerta acts as if she was about to join us at the table. No. You're at work. You come, you serve drinks or food, and you go serve other clients. Even if the clients talk about something important or private, they can stop for a minute when they see you approaching. It’s simply stupid, and I really don’t understand how the writers couldn’t come up with anything better.
Seriously, it’d make more sense if it was a random client instead. I mean, it was a pretty busy day at the Three Broomsticks, right? At least it looked that way. Let’s say someone was indeed hovering over Peregrine and MC because they were waiting for any table to get free. At some point, they got too close or something and that’s what makes Peregrine snap. Wouldn’t it be more realistic? A random person would be also more likely to get scared, and it wouldn’t make MC look so bad for not having a stronger reaction. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was planned originally, but then, someone smart at JC thought it’d be more emotional to switch it to Rosmerta.
It was indeed more emotional, but it also didn’t make much sense.
