The Pressure That The Media and Society Put On Teens (and what comes with it)
One thing that really gets to me is the pressure that the media and society puts on teens to be their version of perfection. They put all of this pressure on people so young, and then wonder what’s wrong with us when we can’t handle it. They show us images of ‘perfect bodied’ people and Spam our heads with their version of beauty. All of them scream ‘THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD LOOK LIKE’ and ‘THIS IS HOW YOU SHOULD ACT’. All the while trying to tell us that if you’re weird, or if you’re not a size zero, you won’t (don’t) fit in. But what they fail to realize is that no matter what they say, we know that these images are air brushed and photo-shopped. We know that they have wiped away every single beautiful imperfection. And yes, I just used beautiful and imperfection in the same sentence-and that’s how it should be! We shouldn't have to be afraid of imperfections. We as human beings are imperfect. Our entire species is based on imperfection. Really, we should just learn to accept that.
They refuse to realize everyone is weird in their own way, and that normalcy is nothing more that a mere illusion. They cannot seem to see that beauty truly is, as they say, in the eyes in the beholder, and that not every eye is the same. For example, in my eyes, personality and uniqueness are beautiful. Scars, disfigurements, and wrinkles are all beautiful to me because no matter how similar, no one else has same as you. As for ‘perfection’, well, it’s been twisted and molded into such unbeknownst idiocy, that it has absolutely no meaning at all. You could be perfect to someone that loves you, but in the eyes of society and all of its ‘ideals’, you’re nothing more than ‘another person’-which is pure insanity! You’re not ‘just another person’.
There are so many people falling into depression and other mental illnesses. The amount of people that say they hate their bodies and themselves is insane, and it’s partially because of society and the media. Because they don’t feel good enough and know that they’ll never be able to fit into these ideals. The way that the media and society portrays beauty, perfection and the ‘importance’ of skinniness, we might as well be skeletons. After all to be that skinny and ‘perfect’ you’d have to be. Seems like societies a little bit of a necrophiliac.
They put so much pressure on us to be prefect and beautiful, when they are the most ugly and imperfect beings around. They don’t care what this is doing to us or how it’s poisoning our minds. But still, they refuse to admit that they’re part of the problem. They are part of the reason that this disease has infected us all, and quite frankly, I’m sick of it. Kids should be able to be happy with who they are, not attacked because of it. They shouldn't have to strive to be something so inevitably untrue to be happy with themselves, because in the end, there will only be more heartache.
Beauty doesn't need to be the superficial thing that it is in society.
It doesn't.
