Ok I’ll bite. YachiMifu.

YachiMifu.

Ooh lord, where do we begin?

In theory, YachiMifu could make sense as a pairing, but in our reality, they simply don’t. The worst part about the superiority complex that the people who ship these two together have is that they insist it’s “unproblematic.”

That is not true.

Over and over we have seen several teenagers and adults with no life argue that fiction affects reality under the geiss of the ‘Jaws Effect.’ As a result, they gaslight and endorse the slaughter of people who they claim are “supporting pedophellia.” (The use of the ad hominem logical fallacy is particularly important here, they use this to try and silence all potential opposition.)

However, in spite of their claims that fiction affects reality, these same people often find toxic and or abusive relationships alluring. When called out for this, their response is usually along the lines of, “It’s not as bad for an abusive relationship to be portrayed in fiction as it is for a pedophellic relationship.” Yet, this sickening logic is simply an attempt to make the ship they prefer sound better. They don’t actually care about pedophellia, nor do they care about what other people ship, they simply want a group of people they can chastise.

In the present day, othering a group of people is highly frowned upon. This is why so many people have come out in support of causes like Palestine, because the tried and true genocidial tactics nations have used for years are not working anymore. Which makes this whole thing odd, doesn’t it? You would think a new generation who has been vocal about being anti-genocide would not wish death upon an entire group of people.

But you would be very wrong.

YachiMifu “shippers” and all of their subsidiaries have continually wished death upon fans of IroYachi, then turned around and tried to make it sound like they are the victims of an oppressive regime. They’re genuinely the least self-aware people you will ever meet. They are not being oppressed because they saw an artist draw Iroha and Yachiyo holding hands. If it really bothers them so much, they should block the artist so they don’t have look at the art any longer. Leaving a hate comment is counter-productive for both you and the artist.

Their attempts to gain the moral highground are laughable, as they’ve continously been xenophobic to Japanese people, downplayed the seriousness of abuse, and re-written the narrative to paint themselves as the victims. Despite the fact that to anyone who disagrees, they mobilize in mobs to accuse them of “supporting pedophellia,” and wish death upon them.

In reality though, I don’t even think the people who do this ship YachiMifu. My reason for this is simple: YachiMifu is an abusive relationship, and that is made abundantly clear from the get-go. Therefore, unless you shipped it because you liked their abusive dynamic, I don’t believe you truly ship YachiMifu. Content where YachiMifu wasn’t an abusive hell-hole of a ship could not be found on the North American server when it ran, nor in the anime. In spite of this, most of YachiMifu’s “shippers” will swear on the soul of their Grandmother that Mifuyu isn’t an abuser, and that their relationship is one of the healthiest.

Which is a great segway into what you requested: Why YachiMifu is problematic.

Mifuyu is an abuser.

At the beginning of Magia Record’s story, Yachiyo’s pushed all her friends away, actively chases any new magical girls out of Kamihama, and refuses to allow herself to make new friends. You can try to claim ignorance on Mifuyu’s part, but she was aware of this too. They wrote will’s to each other at the end of every year, and Yachiyo expressed her survivor’s guilt over the deaths of Mel and Kanae the year before Magia Record begins. In the note, she also clarifies that she will not make friends anymore to prevent casualties like theirs from happening again. At a time when Mifuyu was receiving pressure from the Magius to find a way to stop Yachiyo and co from interfering with their plans, Mifuyu chooses to weaponize Yachiyo’s trauma against her. Mifuyu knew what she was doing, and even though it was a deplorable act of evil, it was an incredibly smart choice given the goal she had. As a result of Mifuyu retraumatizing Yachiyo, she spirals, isolating herself from the few friends she had finally let in. Yachiyo once again began to be reckless with her own life, and had it not been for Iroha’s intervention at the Memory Muesuem, she would have died. As if this wasn’t already horrendous enough, on the same day, Mifuyu invited Yachiyo’s friends to the Memory Muesuem knowing fully well the Magius would brainwash them.

Before somebody goes, “but she broke the brainwashing-“ I don’t care. Mifuyu was the one who created this mess for them in the first place, her undoing it was the bare minimum, which leads to my final point.

Yachiyo is co-dependent.

Mifuyu, despite being the oldest of the six executives in the Wings of the Magius is often the most babied. The main perpetrator of this is none other than Yachiyo herself. No matter how many atrocious acts Mifuyu committed, Yachiyo could not stay angry at her. Not being able to get angry at your partner when they fuck up is one of the most dangerous things you can have in a relationship. Why do you think the people who are the least successful are those who surround themselves with yes-men? In a relationship, friendship, etc. you need someone who will tell you when you fuck up. If Yachiyo can’t even stay angry at Mifuyu for her actions, do you really think if push came to shove that she’d be able to leave her? No!
