Rosa keeping up appearances at all costs even if it means punishing Maria for her childishness, Rosa blaming Maria for her difficulties in love because Maria's father left her alone, Rosa leaving Maria behind at home... Mothers all around grappling for some semblance of importance in the misogynistic structure of the Ushiromiyas. Mothers who blame their children or project onto their children or use their children. Mothers who wanted to be mothers and mothers who didn't want to be mothers and women who can't help but mistreat their children as a reflection of the myriad of ways they themselves have been mistreated.
