SO happy that my FIRST Survivor #BreastCancerAwareness speaking engagement was a success!! Faced my fears and they were pleased. I spoke at Shenandoah University tonight, their Pharmacy Fraternity (Kappa Epsilon) held a small event for local Survivors and their students. Confidence

This has probably been one of my biggest struggles. During middle school, I lost my middle school friends to bullying, and by that I mean they were bullying me. Sleepovers turned into disasters when people would ask why I didn’t wear a two piece swimsuit, or why did my thighs flatten like a pancake when I sat down, or why did I have so many pimples, and so on with the terribly awkward to answer questions. Mind you, I was thirteen.

I hit puberty before most of the other girls my age, so I had to go through all of it alone. I got terribly sick over the nervousness of people judging me to the point where I would make myself sick to lose weight and I’ve popped so many pimples in my teen years that I began scaring from it.

I did end up talking to a counselor about how I was feeling and what was going on, but that didn’t really help the situation. What did help was doing what I wanted to do and not what other girls were doing. I like Harry Potter, X-Men, Star Wars, Avengers, Justice League; most other girls don’t even know what any of those things are to the extent that I do. They were more focused on boys, clothes, and makeup not when the seventh Harry Potter movie was coming out or re watching Justice League Unlimited on Netflix. I learned that it shouldn’t matter what other people think about how you look if you like how you look. If you don’t like how you look, there are safe ways to change some things like diet and exercise, washing your face, and other things.

Today, I don’t care what other people think about what I like, and how I look. It’s taken me a long time to come to this conclusion, but the journey was definitely worth it. You’re a strong person who doesn’t need anyone to tell them that they’re smart, kind, and beautiful other than the person looking right at you when you look in the mirror. You go!

To Take the Good with the Bad

Take the good with the bad. What does that exactly mean? Well, according to http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/, it means “to accept the unpleasant parts of a situation as well as the pleasant parts”. And believe me, there are TONS of these times not only in college, but with life in general. And I’m here to tell you that this is a good way to approach situations.

Here’s why.

Unless you are the smartest person in the world, cheating, or are actually a robot, you will have a point in your school career where you fail an assignment. No one wants to fail at anything, especially if you fail on your own standards. You might want to drop the class at this point, and not challenge yourself again, but you cannot do that to yourself. You will never know what you can succeed if you do not challenge yourself. In this situation (the failure of an assignment (the bad)), there are many ways to approach the next type of assignment (the good), and know that you did as good as you could (also a good).

You’re a person, and you experience emotions. You’ll probably fall head over heels over someone, and they might break your heart one day (the bad). You’ll be upset, and you’ve got every right to be that way, but you also have to move on. You might have had a wonderful relationship with that person, and you should treasure those memories (the good), or it might have been an awful one that ended just in time (another good).

Whatever the case maybe, you’ll most likely be in a rut at one point or another, but you have to pick yourself up off the ground, brush off any bad mojo, stick a smile on your face, and fake it till you make it.

Top 15 Things I Miss From Home

College can be a hard thing for many people, and rightfully so. I mean, how many times do people willingly choose to move far away from their family and friends to live in a tiny room with a complete stranger? Not very often, the only time I can think about is college. So, because it’s actually Fall break and this will be the first time I’m going back home, here is a top 15 list of things that I miss from home.

My Mom

If there is one thing you take away from getting to know me, it’s that I’m a big family come first kind of girl. And the one that always comes to mind is my mom. Not that i’m saying my dad is any less important, because I am a Daddy’s Little Girl, but I just have a closer relationship as of late with my mom. It’s been an adjustment not being able to see her and ask about her day right when she walks home everyday, but it’s gotten easier. I can’t wait to give her a big hug when I see her!

My Dad

Like I mentioned earlier, big on family, big on my parents. My dad isn’t the most emotional guy, but he’s always been there for me. He’s had my back since day one, and not hearing him coach me through each little step is something I miss. Yea I get the occasional tip here and there, but he’s not actually witnessing my accomplishments anymore. I can’t wait to hear his dad jokes in person and hear his unforgettable laugh.

My brother

I never thought I would say it, but I actually miss the little shit. He’s a thorn in my side usually, and I thought I’d be thankful to get away, but when you’ve grown up with someone, it’s hard to say goodbye. Yes, he still is an ass, but he’s also maturing faster than I thought he would. I miss hearing his one liners, or how the teachers that I had in the past are giving him shit, but I think the weekend will be enough time for me to get my fill.

My dog

This one is obvious, especially to dog lovers. I won’t go into it too much, because so many people feel the same. Just know I won’t stop cuddling with her for a good two hours.

My bed

OH MY GOD MY BED! Just even the privacy of my own room makes me excited to go back home!

My friends

They won’t be home when I am, which is while i’ll miss them. You think that when your friends go to different schools, at least you’ll have break. But no, because not all schools do it the same way. At least there’s facetime.

My bathroom

A few words. 2-ply toilet paper. Privacy. Clean.

Home cooked meals

Just being able to make food is a blessing. I don’t have to walk two blocks for dinner, I just need to walk down stairs. I never realized how convenient food is at home versus away.

Driving

The control you get behind the wheel is something you don’t usually find anywhere but behind the wheel. Even just going to fill up my dad’s gas tank makes me feel powerful!

My backyard

My backyard is very unique. We back up to a forest preserve, so I’m used to wildlife, tall grass, and bad allergies. At school, it’s just buildings and squirrels. Where are my pretty dear?!

My closet

Yes I re-wear the same outfits regardless of if I get new clothes or not, but just knowing that if I decided to be adventurous with my outfit for the day, I could. Plus, free laundry!

Using silverware

It’s not that I don’t use silverware while I’m at school, it's that it’s plastic or it’s the dining halls. Just knowing that I can reach into the drawer and pull out a spoon that I won't have to throw away makes me feel homey.

My personal space

Don’t get me wrong, living with a roommate is like a blessing in disguise. I’ll get more into roommates and new friends later on, but just know that we get along amazingly. But being able to just lock the door to my room and know that no one else has the key to get in gives me a sense of human. At school, someone could walk in at any second, but at home they have to knock and I have to be the one to either let them in or deny them permission.

Not having to worry about where your keys are 24/7

This is just paranoia. I don’t want to be that kid who loses their keys all the time and has to be asked to be let in every time. I don’t want to be that freshman.

Familiarity

This one is pretty straight forward. Knowing where everything is, what everyone is doing, how everyone is makes me feel at ease. I’m learning to feel this at school as well, it just takes more time away from home.
