well if ur talking about things that have made me stop reading and be like what the actual fuck was when i was researching the dress reform movement and i had to read a lot of newspapers about how the world was ending bc ladies weren’t gonna wear corsets anymore!!! pants!!! oh god the humanity!!!! but if you’re talking about ancient peoples being ridiculous humans(like we all are honestly) i’m partial to 1) The Booby. I know i posted about this earlier but for real. athenians looked at Cimon’s grandfather and was like “ya know what will REALLY GET HIM. lets call him The Booby. that’ll show him” and they did. he was known as The Booby. thucydides called him The Booby in an text that we still use today that was written in the 400s bce. The Booby will never die. 2) also in ancient greece, before solon left on this self-imposed exile after his reforms(to prove that he wasn’t a tyrant and that athens could totally be trusted to run itself w/ the new reforms(spoiler: they can’t) he basically says “guys don’t let any tyrants in and just follow my reforms and everything will be good” guess what happens? (we all know what happens) athens completely disregards that advice and gets a tyrant and falls into a period of anarchy. solon leaving was literally just like step one: dont fuck anything up athens: we failed step one 3) the graffiti at pompeii is literally the best like “ Defecator, may everything turn out okay so that you can leave this place” apparently there was a mad pooper loose in pompeii bc there’s a lot of graffiti talking about this dude who just poops everywhere and reading it makes me laugh like the child i am inside (poop humor bringing joy to humans since before 79 AD) 4) HONESTLY speaking of poop humor literally everything was probably a dick joke. humanity’s sense of humor has not changed at all. 5) one time my text book put in a pocahontas reference and i laughed a lot
