Interview: Yan Birch (The People Under the Stairs, Terror Tales)
Actor Yan Birch discusses his role as Satan in the indie horror anthology Terror Tales, which is available now on DVD and VOD, along with his past work in such favorites as The People Under the Stairs, Slumber Party Massacre III, Death House, and more.
Can you begin by telling us a little bit about Terror Tales and how you got involved?
Terror Tales is a great anthology film with three different tales. I play Satan in the last tale, called “Epidemic.” It’s a shout-out to older films like Creepshow, and I believe director Jimmy Lee Combs really nailed it with the ‘80s look and feel throughout the movie. I was actually approached on Twitter and got hooked up with Jimmy. We had a few interesting conversations, I decided to jump onboard, and I’m glad I did. Jimmy was wonderful to work with.
What kind of preparations did you do to play the devil?
I wanted to do my own take on Satan, since this role has been played thousands of times before me by great actors who have put their own spin of comedy or darkness on it. I left myself open to what the character was really saying in the dialogue as a dark human being, and then added elements of creepiness. It felt more organic for the character to make it a natural progression of the unfolding of evil the further into the story we got, since I play him first in human form and then in full transition as Satan.
The film features fellow genre favorites Lynn Lowry, Felissa Rose, Jonathan Tiersten, Ari Lehman, and Helene Udy. Did you get to work with any of them?
In this particular film, I did not get to work directly with any of them, but I have known Felissa and Jonathan for a long time, and its always fun to work together. It’s great to have your friends in a film, even if you don’t always get to work the scenes together.
You also worked with many horror icons on Death House. How was that experience?
Death House was a great experience, and it was like one big family on set. I knew most of them from before this job as well, and it was great hanging out. The most fun we actually had was between scenes, when we all just sat around catching up on our lives and sharing personal anecdotes. That was definitely fun.
You're best known for playing the Stairmaster in The People Under the Stairs. How do you feel reflecting back on that film?
I owe so much to Wes Craven and this film. It has given me more than I could have ever imagined when I first got the part. It was great fun, and I was fortunate to become close with Wes. We had a wonderful friendship all the way up to his passing, which was way too early. This film also gave me life long friendships with Sean Whalen, Brandon Adams, and Kelly Jo Minter. We do a lot of horror conventions together, and they feel like family. That film is still the best experience of my life in this industry.
What did you learn from working with master of horror Wes Craven?
I learned so much about the art of acting and the importance of patience, emotions, truth, being real, taking chances. And just being calm, stepping back a little, and knowing that everything is going to be alright, no matter what choice I make.
You had a small role in Slumber Party Massacre III as well. What do you recall abut that experience? Were you familiar with the other Slumber Party Massacre films?
This was my first feature in the US, and I was beyond excited to book a film. The fact that it was a Roger Corman movie did not exactly make it any less exciting! I actually slept three nights on a bus bench to get the feel of being homeless to prepare for the character I was playing. I went all out on that one! [laughs] At that time I was not familiar with any of those films, and the working title on that job was Night Light, so I had no idea it was part of the Slumber Party Massacre series.
Do you have any other projects we should be on the lookout for?
Yes, I have been very fortunate in the last few years. Besides Terror Tales that came out on VOD last month and DVD this month, I have several more films coming out, including Sky Sharks, which is a mix between Walking Dead and Sharknado. Lots of other horror stars in that one, including Tony Todd, Naomi Grossman, Dave Sheridan, Lynn Lowry and Robert LaSardo. I believe this is coming out in May sometime. I also have a film by Harley Wallen called Agramon’s Gate with Laurene Landon. That one has a theatrical release in September, and I’m really looking forward to both those. I did another Harley Wallen film called Abeyance with Scout Taylor-Compton and Billy Wirth that should be out around November. Another film I did with Diane Franklin called Waking Nightmare should be out sometime this year. I also did Killer Rose, a film by Ricky Bird Jr., which has a great cast including Felissa Rose and Caroline Williams. I got to shoot the film Portal together with Naomi Grossman last year. I am so humbled and grateful for all these opportunities.
Lastly, why would you say someone should check out Terror Tales when it comes out?
Anyone that likes ‘70 and ‘80s horror films in general, and Creepshow in particular, should definitely check this one out. I believe Jimmy Lee Combs did a fantastic job with this film, and it’s a really fun ride. Fasten your seat belts!
