The therapist’s office smells faintly of chamomile tea and wood polish, a calming atmosphere that doesn’t quite reach the knot in your stomach. You sit on the couch with Shin beside you, his arm stretched across the backrest like he’s claiming territory. His expression is deceptively neutral, but you can feel the way his body leans just slightly toward yours, as if daring you to inch away.
The therapist clears their throat, pen poised. “So, Shin… can you tell me what brings you both here today?”
Shin exhales through his nose, eyes flicking to you before locking on the therapist. “They think I’m… too much.” His voice is flat, but the twitch of his fingers against your shoulder betrays irritation. “But I’m not. I’m just making sure no one touches what’s mine.”
“Shin,” you say softly, trying to sound firm without sparking one of his moods. “It’s not just about other people. It’s about the way you follow me everywhere. The way you read my thoughts before I can even finish them. I don’t… feel like I can breathe sometimes.”
His head turns sharply toward you, eyes narrowing. “You think breathing without me is safe? Do you know what people would do to you if I wasn’t watching?” There’s an edge to his tone, the obsessive protectiveness bleeding through. His hands curl into fists in his lap. “You don’t see the things I see. You don’t hear the thoughts I hear about you. They’re disgusting. I’m not the problem....they are.”
The therapist jots something down, unfazed by his sharpness. “Shin, what you’re describing sounds like hypervigilance, and while it comes from a place of wanting to protect, it can overwhelm your partner. How would you feel if, instead of reading their mind or following, you asked them directly how they’re feeling?”
Shin scoffs, leaning back. “As if she'd tell me the truth. I hear the truth in her head. I know when she lies. I can’t just turn it off.” His jaw tightens, then he looks at you again, softer but more intense. “I can’t turn you off.”
You swallow, heart pounding, because beneath his words is that same suffocating truth—you’re trapped between his devotion and his obsession.
The ticking clock on the wall fills the silence. You shift on the couch, fingers tightening around the hem of your sleeve before you finally say it:
“It's becoming a lot.. a little too much Shin.. it's coming to a point where sometimes i just want to leave...”
The therapist leans forward, ready to guide the conversation. “Space can sometimes be helpful in resetting boundaries. How does that idea make you feel, Shin?”
For a moment, he doesn’t move. His body goes perfectly still, eyes fixed on you in that unsettling way like he’s peeling back your skull and staring directly at the thought itself. His lips part slowly.
“You…” His voice is low, dangerous. “You were going to leave me?” His hand twitches, nails digging into his knee. “Are you insane?”
