Woke up this morning to that wen ruohan and yanshi ficlet, omg yangshi is adorable!! I kinda wanna know more about him?!
Hehe!! 😊 Yangshi was born to a farmer family who encouraged him to swordfight so every week he'd work on the farm and on the weekends he'd train. He loved tending to the animals and the crops and the garden and since he was an only child he'd get all his parents' attention and they Loved him because he is baby. Taught him kindness and patience and sympathy and all that. Then one day when he's 14 there's some fucking asshole at his door (Wen Xu) who "recruits" him by stripping him of his family name (Yue) and burning his farmhouse down with his parents still inside. So this literal kid is thrown into an army and told to do the most awful things. He feels hopeless. He feels like he's dead already, just a ghost roaming the earth. But he has no home to return to and he's so afraid. So he does what he's told, but he's quick and clean. He doesn't want people to suffer. He thinks about revenge, but he knows it's unrealistic. He also figures he doesn't deserve it since he's already killed all these people. He just keeps waiting and waiting for someone to kill him and finally set him free.
When he's 24 is when he finally gets posted to the Nightless City. By now he literally can't sleep without drinking first. His body is strong, but his mind isn't, and it's all he can do to shut it off. This guy doesn't toughen up. He does what he's told, but his eyes always shine. He always looks like he's going to cry. Despite what he's become, he's overflowing with kindness but he has nowhere to put it. Wen Ruohan notices this. He thinks it's funny. He thinks it's curious and cute. And so he low-key becomes interested in Yangshi.
Eventually when Yangshi notices the connection he starts trying to use it to the advantage of others. He thinks perhaps if he's kind to Wen Ruohan, kind and Loving, he'll change, even if it's the slightest bit, and that slightest bit is enough to save some lives. Then, since he's genuinely a softie inside, he falls for his charms. He's always doing it with others in mind, but he develops a real attachment to Wen Ruohan. He won't leave his side and would die beside him.

He has golden skin and black hair and eyes. He has a sharp nose and his thick brows always look a little worried. His name literally means "world of the living" so I wanted to have him breathe life and hope into things even when there is none
