Ancient Chinese Philosophy developed during the Spring and Autumn Period (c. 772-476 BCE) and the Warring States Period (c. 481-221 BCE) in ancient China. This was the era known as the Hundred Schools of Thought, referring to many different philosophical schools active at this time, not just 100 of them.

无为 /wúwéi/ EFFORTLESS ACTION (or Enlightened Action) is one of the most inspiring concepts of Chinese philosophy.

It may sound strange to people in the West, because Western culture is all about ME, ME, ME while 无为 comes from the recognition that Ego is an illusion.

But the stranger it sounds the more valid and valuable it is, especially now at the time of the inevitable collapse of the decaying Western culture.

The literal translation is No-action, but that doesn’t mean that we should be passive.

The position of Wúwéi is a position of total Freedom.

That is the position when our judgement and therefor our actions aren’t corrupted by our desires, ambitions, our wants and needs - basically by our ego.

When we act in the 无为 way, we act like a free medium of Life itself.

The action happens through us.

"Seyi Life" (舒适生活)

In the beginning there was fire...A source of warmth, lighting, and protection. In fact, there are records indicating the discovery of fire dating back to 1.5 million years ago in South Africa’s Wonderwerk Cave. Glowing red and orange kindling flames changed the course of human evolution. According to the Taoist theory of the five elements (五行), fire is the component of heat, summer, and enthusiasm. It represents nature at its peak of growth. Golden flames flickering in the heat of the night. A bright symbol for warmth in human relationships. Fire also becomes disorderly like a dissolute Jan Steen household (1663). Either way you see, it flourishes with life and passion. A scorching blaze of colors dancing before our very eyes! Quite enchanting, isn’t it? A hypnotizing reminder of our earliest technology. Dare to stare into the roaring red and listen to the stories it must tell. Fire has always been sensuous and relaxed. Very gezellig. It’s Chinese counterpart, Shūfu (舒服) meaning comfortable. Or “Seyi” in Shanghainese. Picture yourself overlooking the Jura mountains, sipping on a glass of Valais wine, enjoying warm fondue. That’s the sweet Seyi life.

Well meaning advices over the years told me not to be too showy because I would be under the limelight, blinded by the spotlight and I won’t be able to see “the enemy” who remains in the dark. People are malicious and will bring me down, I was told. I was told I was too naive and too trusting so I am fair game to conmen out there. I exposed too much too soon, apparently. Over the years, I’ve had my share of experiences where I suffered from betrayal, cheating, a lot of pain and still I choose to trust in people. With each experience, I grew firmer, longer roots, I became more grounded. Come what may, I know better now. I am less reactive now. If they continue to run their mouth, it’s their mouth, it’s their free will. I just don’t associate with them that much or at all. Especially when they are “family” or relatives, I learned to be stoic and calm in the face of the storm and for once the guilt tripping didn’t work and they “lost” the power over my heart. When I don’t feel bad for making that choice, they knew that I am no longer under their control. No more emotional blackmail. No more guilty conscience. No more manipulation. I don’t blame them. I am not a victim. They didn’t know any better. I know better so I choose to remain firmly grounded. The Chinese proverb literally translates to; Big Tree Attracts Wind. We can’t stop the “wind”, the only way is to go deeper, grow stronger roots and be so still and firm in your own core being that no matter how strong the wind, you will never falter, you will never fall.
