Today I'll share my ongoing project 'Forest' with you. This project follows the life of displaced trees in new Chinese cities and questions the meaning of home in the age of mass urbanization. Good morning! So today I'll talk a little bit about 'Mother River' as an unpredictable physical journey. This picture of me standing on the Land Cruiser was taken while I was waiting for the light at Y4 - an unpopulated area about 4,700m above the sea level. The first half of the river required adventure style traveling and I was so exhausted but excited all the time. But the journey was also restless---I was on a different bed every night. One night I slept on the permafrost earth next to the girl in the 2nd picture. It was an awful night with high altitude sickness. When we started having hostels, most beds were like the one in the 3rd picture. I photographed all the 76 beds I slept in. #yanpreston, #tjetland, #igtakeover, #femalephotographer.

So now we're already reaching the mouth of the Yangtze River. The 3 images here are of Y57, Y60 and Y63, each at 5,600km, 5,900km and 6,200km from the river source. Y63 was taken at the river mouth on the 16th November 2013. It was a beautiful, calm and joyful moment in my life. I took it while standing in the water with bare feet. The water was still fresh instead of salty, I tasted it. #yanpreston, #tjetland, #igtakeover, #femalephotographer.

Hi people, so here's the 2nd post today:) After a 2-year research period for 'Mother River' during which I did various performative and photographic experiments (pl see previous posts), I committed to the proper 'Mother River' project. I was to photograph the entire 6,211km Yangtze River at precise 100km intervals. This would give me 63 photo locations (Y1-Y63), many of which were extremely remote and nearly all of them were vernacular sites. I wanted to subvert the established hierarchy among Yangtze River places and to produce photos that weren't normally associated with the idealized Yangtze as the Mother River of China. Here you see a map and the images at Y8, Y18 and Y20, each at 700km, 1,700km and 1,900km away from the river source. Good morning everyone! So my 1st post today is about two other touching pieces 'Yuan' that I did on the Yangtze River. In the two images, there are 127 Yangtze River stones each, and each stone was held by me for 10 seconds each. The locations were very different: one at the source of the Yangtze, another one 3,700km downstream from the source in a mega city called Chongqing. I initially wanted to be close to the river by holding the stones shaped by its water power. I then decided to deliberately compare these two seemingly very different landscapes. Hello! I'm Yan Wang Preston, I'm very happy to post at @tjejland for the next few days. I'll share two projects with you. One is a completed project 'Mother River' and another one 'Forest' is ongoing. In this first post you see three images from a performance work 'Yuan', in which I painted a red circle on the frozen headwater of Yangtze River in China. It's a remote location on the Tibetan Plateau, 5,320 meters above the sea level. This work was made in November 2011 as an early experiment for 'Mother Piver'project.
