Trying something different this year and planting some stuff around my yard and using cardboard, mulch, and whatever else I have around for ground cover.
Crocheting my way though this.
It begins.
Grabbed a shovel and started turning up the earth in the yard, which has had grass and randomness growing throughout in patches since I’ve lived here (going on 3 years).
Cleaned up a spot close to the house where I’ll build a raised bed for idk what yet.
Dumped the last of last season’s container dirt from the containers into the corner compost (and also dirt) pile. Mixed some dry leaves in with it all, and turned it over.
Picked up some old wood-framed windows - a couple without glass - from a nice person who’d responded to my local social media post inquiring about any unwanteds in the area, and brought them home. (She had quite a neat hodgepodge area of planted and built in her backyard, too.)
Actually FOUND some old, rotting wood/log pieces behind my house while doing some area cleanup, and started a pile. I’ll use these for the hugelkultur beds. Not sure where they’re going yet.
After shoveling a lot of the afternoon away, went on a walk before sundown and picked up a couple of boards sitting along curbs (for trash collection tomorrow morning) on the way back. I’ll use as much “trash” and unwanted material in this whole yard-garden project as I can, both to keep costs minimal and to help “close the loop” on the use-and-dispose cycle.
It’s kinda fun to have one (or both) eyes open for material that can be re-/up-cycled; trolling social media and Craigslist for free stuff & unwanteds, and finding random stuff that can be used/converted along a curb while out for a drive or walk. Might get addicted to it.
Must admit, I have little idea what I’m doing here, so advice is welcome, should you see something I’m doing that could be tweaked or rerouted for the better.

semi-legitimate question: is Swooping behavior common to Magpies in general or possibly even other birds? I live in the North American Great Lakes Region and for several years now, whenever I mow my yard I am accosted by an unidentified avian from around mid-spring until nearly fall. It specifically seems to hate the lawnmower as my family is able to move around the yard on foot unmolested and the behavior lasts much longer than it would if it were defending it's offspring. How do I make peace?
Semi-legitimate answer: I’m not a comparative ornithosociodynamicist so I can’t speak as to the difference between swooping and Swooping, but in your case it sounds like less of a nest protection stratagem and more a way to drive off a perceived predator. I am also not a terribly good ornithobehaviourotomist so take the following advice with a grain of salt.Without further information I can’t really speak as to what might ameliorate the animosity, but you seem to have narrowed it down to the lawnmower being the root cause. Did you buy it second-hand from someone who claims it ‘fell off the back of a truck’? If so the lawnmower might actually belong to the bird and they are doing their level best to reclaim stolen property. If the mower has an explosion engine, it’s very possible that the bird is attempting to enforce avian noise ordinances and/or suffers from migraines so you should switch to a generally much quieter and environmentally-friendly electric mower.Worst-case scenario is you’ve stumbled on one of the few birds who not only eschew modern technology but also attempt to force this ideology on others, in which case your peaceful recourses are to get a pushmower, landscape your yard so as to minimize the necessity of mowing in the bird-enforced territory (personally I suggest a fruit and vegetable garden), or you could simply wait until the bird moves out or dies of natural causes.
