I went a little nuts in the clearance section at the garden centre and then it was 34 C and above for 3 days, which doesn’t happen here. Still, my impulse buy plants have mostly made it. We’ve got a bed of tomatoes, marigolds, Serrano, jalapeños and banana peppers, and basil. We’ve got one very sad hydrangea and a surprisingly resilient rose bush. We’ve got zinnias, marigolds and cosmos in with the strawberries, and a pot with oregano and a pepper. Also unpictured I have some lupine and larkspur.

Also I have to pick up an extensive order of native plants in about a week. I try not to go overboard but it just happens 🙃

09/05/24 - Lago Vista, TX - FINALLY - Finally completed the first of many planned landscaping yard projects: a path connecting an existing sidewalk to one of our new pool patios. The hardest part was lifting and positioning the 2 ft by 4 ft leuder paving stones. They were so heavy that we had to get a couple guys to help out with that part. Before, it was just dirt and weeds. Look at it now. This first project is the first step of our overall strategy to do a combination of zeroscape (no plants) and xeriscape (drought tolerant plants) to get to a low maintenance yard with minimal water requirements. So far, so good; just need to pick up the pace (see 06/04/24 post when we started this).

06/04/24 - Lago Vista, TX - OUR FIRST YARD PROJECT - Building the pool was the first of many yard projects. That was the pool crew. Now it’s our turn and our first phase will be landscaping all around the pool and pool patio areas starting with covering up the dirt area between the pool patio and sidewalk off the main patio. When it’s done we’ll have a little garden below the main patio wall and three big paving stones with a combination of Mexican beach pebbles seen pictured and brown rock filler between and around them. It’s an involved process. First, there’s a lot of weeding and raking which invariably uncovers more weeds and their root systems. Then you spray the dirt with herbicide to kill whatever’s left. Then, we cover the ground with cardboard to act as a weed barrier. Then you lay down some sand where the paving stones will be to keep them stable and to prevent cracking. And finally, we’ll lay down the three big paving stones and fill in everything else with small rocks. We’ll have to get a picture when we’re done to give you a better idea as to what we’re talking about. So far, I’m enjoying my new hobby. That’s good because it will be a few years before it’s all done.
