It had never happened before. She could have sworn it. Being a caregiver was not a natural inclination of hers, but with him, it came smoothly; Flowing like a small string of water in a peaceful stream. Effortless, instinctive, innate.
She didn't like him at first, not at all. His sharp eyes gave him a somewhat menacing look. Not to mention the uncomfortable juxtaposition between his rough appearance and the formal, business attire he always wore. Yasu was always lingering in the background, with his indecipherable face, his stupid sunglasses, and his honorable values.
The rejection she felt towards him must have been due to a lack of understanding. She did not know why he acted the way he did, and that inspired an unshakable distrust within her. How could anyone be that altruistic? In her experience, overly kind-hearted people were always overcompensating for a terrible flaw in their character.
With time, however, she began to understand that his feared, ulterior motive really seemed to be of help for others around him. Much to her new-found tranquility, this seemed to stem from the two axis of his life: Nana, his sweet friend, and Ren, his brother. His kindness was derived from his need of fixing and nurturing all of what surrounded his pillars of affection. The realization soothed the girl tremendously. While he truly was a good man, no one was that innately kind, and the ulterior, sinister motor of his actions? An honest devotion for the members of his chosen family.
Her chaotic personality had always paired poorly with how difficult she had found the management of adult life, so she usually had a hard time caring for others, because, most days, taking care of herself proved to be way too hard for her abilities. Nonetheless, seeing how he juggled legal work, the band, and taking good care of everyone in his near vicinity inspired an unnamed spark to shine inside of her heart.
And so it began. Simple things, really. When work was piling up, Yasu carried his computer to rehearsals, —How did he have the money to buy a portable one was beyond you— to make as much progress as possible in between sets, and so, she closed the lid whenever he forgot to, so it wouldn't overheat. The girl also had to constantly move his work papers far away from Shin, who, without a care in the world, tended to blow the ashes of his cigarettes everywhere. Whenever, late at night, Yasu mentioned having to go home to complete unfinished, tedious work, she would walk to the coffee shop down the street and buy him a coffee for him to endure the strenuous night. The day he got his eyebrow piercing done, the man found a little spray antiseptic solution for the upkeep near his drums. He didn't need to read the small, yellow sticky note beside it to know who it was from.
Yasu had always enjoyed her present, but with those gestures, it did not take long before he was swapped over by the girl. She openly saw him, as an individual, as a flawed person, not as a perfect, sterile rock to rely on. What had Nobu said to him? The thing Shin had said about Hachi? That everyone wanted a piece of him, but she had shown him unrequited kindness. True affection.
Most days, he was too busy fixing others to remember to take care of himself. Just as the heavy solidness in his heart became too much to bear, she would appear with her gestures, and he, suddenly reinvigorated with a new strength, was even kinder to her, noticing details
most would have never been able to see, making her heart burn with even more warmth. It became a beautiful unvicious cycle.
The girl had fallen in love before, but she always related the feeling to a strong wave of jealousy, dependence, the buzz of smoke and booze mixing together to push her even further down. She had never experienced anything else, not as a child, at her own home, and certainly not as a young woman, finding love outside the family core. It had made her distrustful, paranoid, frankly awkward and inexperienced with performing sanity.
This time though, while not foreign to the burning passion of desire, the love they had for each other was also intertwined with a soft, calm, healthiness. She had thought such simple domesticity would never be able to satisfy her, like a rejected dog, she thought of herself as a prisoner of the unbendable ties emotional storms had on her.
It did not take long before things escalated, despite her initial reservations, she had always found him attractive, that much was clear. Yasu had an incredibly tall height, a harsh sense of elegance, and that quiet ambition of his. She had caught herself more than once, dreaming of marrying him, wearing that dreaded white gown, and spending her life taking care of him, and allowing herself to be taken care of. To be truly loved. The girl, with each passing day, with her growing passion for him, found it increasingly harder to push down this new-found desire.
But for now, they both eased at night to the embrace of sleep, truly resting and recharging their strengths for yet another day, arms, and legs protectively thrown over one another, reassured by the strong, safe pulsations of the heart of the other.
Outside, the streets were filled with smoke, the interminable sound of traffic, the bars, and clubs loud music scattered throughout the wind, impregnating it with a sense of vertiginous vigor, the biggest and liveliest city they had known. Nightlife truly never stopped.
Inside? The smell of coffee and nicotine mixed in with the scent candles spread throughout the apartment. The only buzz that could be made out, besides the restful breathing, was the one on the computer. The weight of the warm, thick blanket formed an almost magical shield on top of them. The fridge was full, the floor was clean, and for the time being, that was all that they really needed. Besides each other, of course.
Finally, the desired, elusive safety they had always longed for.
