The primary mechanic of BoxBoy! is deeply intuitive and provides a significant depth of play throughout the game. By allowing the player to generate boxes that are attached to their character in different shapes, and then allow them to either retract themselves along those boxes or release that set as an interactive world element, a huge number of puzzle possibilities open up, with additional gameplay elements introduced via the stage, rather than by changing what the player character can do.
