Pictures from my trip to the Genoa National Fish Hatchery in Genoa, Wisconsin. This hatchery supplies 15 different species of fish, some freshwater mussels, and an endangered dragonfly species to places across the country.
The top three photos are baby sturgeon. The smallest ones are less than a week old. The bigger ones are about 2-3 weeks old. The building they are kept in has 25 big pools and 30 smaller pools for the baby sturgeon. Each bin has 2-5,000 hatchlings each.
We also went outside to the stock pools and got to feed the rainbow trout. The water is colored so that it's easier to see the trout when they need to count and relocate them for transport.
The visitor center had a couple aquariums where you could see young sturgeon, catfish, bass and some small turtles.
fish. um. um.

[[Monster AU: Maggie gets sick and is uneasy about Clair coming around her nest - not because she's worried about Clair getting sick, but about her being attacked and being too weak to protect her.]]
Maggie was always so grouchy, even when she wasn't sick. Whenever someone got to close to her or her next, she'd snarl. Giving them a look that would make anything back away. Not Clair, though. Maggie had made it clear she enjoyed her presence from time to time.
Today, however, she was sick. Curled up in a ball in her secluded nest. Clair had been in the river most of the day catching fish and knew Maggie probably hadn't gotten up to eat.
"Here." Clair said, pushing a large fish over to Maggie with her nose. "Not your favorite, I know, but you have to eat."
The larger monster gave her a small growl, and Clair knew she wasn't much in the mood for company. She left the fish by her side anyway and left the den. She made sure not to wander too far in case the other female needed any help.
