I know at first there is definitely an “ugh” factor when thinking about going into a cemetery/graveyard and if it’s just to break/trample things than yeah fuck off. But going into play games I think is pretty harmless because (I like reading morbid things) up until the Victorians it was considered respectful to go into cemeteries and have picnics and use them as parks because that’s where all the green space was. It’s as a modern culture that’s moved us to “how dare you step on/disrespect them!”
i think it really depends on your beliefs. the idea that someone you loved being laid to rest is now the new playground when there are parks for that reason. there are community centers for that reason. there are backyards for that reason. so i don’t agree. there has always been a visceral part of me that finds the very white culture of co-opting grave sites for parties, festivals, games that aren’t in any way respecting the dead is wrong. there is something in this world that should be sacred. and that is what i believe. it was how i was raised and it is how i can compartmentalism the loss of loved ones that they are being treated with dignity in the afterlife and that were they are being laid to rest is a safe haven and a hallowed ground.
i mean, i have been to remembrance day parades where i have had tourists laugh and take pictures and i am like, people died and are still dying, this isn’t for you. this is for remembrance. this is for us to hold these people close and remember. there are many cultures that celebrate with the dead. but there is a sense of community and respect and i don’t see that with play tag in a graveyard where people actually come to maintain the graves of loved ones and hold it as a place of reverence.
i understand people have different opinions on this. i am not debating that. i don’t want to debate that
