The Canadian Council of Archives and Young Canada Works.
Just a quick bulletin and round-of-applause about the news that the CCA will be administering the Young Canada Works program funding formerly disbursed by the CLA.
http://cla.ca/2016-2017-young-canada-works-heritage-organizations-summer-work-experience-and-building-careers-in-heritage-programs-within-canadian-libraries-and-related-organizations-to-be-administered-by/
“CLA is not able to sign agreements for the 2016 – 2017 program year, nor will it be able to deliver the YCW program. CLA did not want to see these programs cancelled for the 2016 – 2017 year and has been working towards a solution with the Department of Canadian Heritage and CCA that would not only see the program continue, but continue seamlessly. The Canadian Council of Archives’ (CCA) Board of Directors extended its support to the library community during this critical period of transition, by offering to continue the direct delivery of YCW in order to avoid delays or complications for approved organizations. Further, CCA is seeking to keep the delivery as consistent and seamless as possible by maintaining the status quo with staffing and volunteer capacity for CLA’s current YCW delivery.”
As the press release notes, CCA has been delivering some YCW funding since 1996, and certainly has had the capacity to facilitate similar programs in the way of the NADP and etc. Since the loss of the NADP almost crippled the CCA and its ability to serve the archival community in other ways, this news is fantastic.
I pray in my heart of hearts that the CCA continues to administer these funds, and that the newly-formed Canadian Federation of Library Associations divests itself of other vestiges of the CLA’s past, in order to fulfill its mandate of focusing on advocacy and policy at a national level.
I expect I’ll have more to say on the YCW program in general, in the near future, especially after that budget ... but for now, maybe some uncomplicated celebration is in order.
Nothing pisses me off more than when people assume I do nothing because I work nightshift. 😡😤
