HAPPY 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY TO OUR LITTLE GAY WITCH STORY!!!
as a latine creator, would you rather white artists try their best to represent a wide variety of cultures in their art the best they can, or stay in their lane? i'm curious specifically because your comment towards the "taako challenge" that white people should maybe just not. as a white artist, i have to admit that i've shied way from trying to depict poc characters because i'm scared of accidentally offending someone. wondering what your take on that would be.. thank you!
So overall, I think white artists SHOULD try and represent as many different and wonderful people and cultures as possible! That’s just good storytelling and what the world is like! BUT... they should NOT be telling our stories for us! You get me? Meaning, you can have diversity in your work as a white content creator, but when it comes to telling OUR specific stories, such as the story of an immigrant, or being a black teenager in America, or what it means to be trans when you’re cis, DO NOT do that. BIG NO NO.
Which is WHY dnd works so well because you can have a halfing character who is Latine in this fantasy world and focus entirely on their journey as a musician and hero! And not really have to deal with extreme issues of race, you can bring up super simple stuff like maybe they like playing a certain genre of music cause it reminds them of their childhood and they have the nickname “chaparro” because they’re short jeje, but once you start trying to bring up serious issues we face... yeah, no... leave that to the “professionals” AKA the people who live those experiences on the daily.
The underrepresented SHOULD and MUST be in charge of their own stories and narratives and sharing their own personal experiences! And white creators should be UPLIFTING those narratives and sharing the stories of those creatives of color! NOT telling those stories. BUT white creatives do NEED to do research when they can if they do plan on representing us! Research is the bare minimum!!!
AGAIN, white people can represent us in their stories and art, but they should NOT under any circumstance, be telling OUR stories and OUR narratives.
Hope that makes sense!
