Miranda Lambert - The House That Built Me

I really don’t post enough country. And it’s funny because I actually like country music quite a bit (anyone who knows me well can tell you Shania is one of my all-time faves), but for whatever reason I always seem to overlook it. (Note to self: post more country music in 2011).

Anyway we’re not here to talk about my new year’s resolutions; we’re here to talk about Miranda Lambert. Released as a single in 2010, “The House That Built Me” is the highlight of Miranda’s excellent 2009 album Revolution, which in its own right is chock full of highlights. I only purchased the disc last month and I can’t believe how long I’ve gone without it. In my personal opinion Revolution is exactly what modern country should sound like; not afraid to bow to pop hooks and a great melody, but still maintaining that soul and grit which defines the genre. And soul is exactly what The House That Built Me is, well, built on. Stunningly beautiful in its simplicity, this song is all about the lyrics. Backed by nothing more than an acoustic guitar, Miranda talks about her childhood home, going over all the small details like the tree in the backyard and “handprints on the front step”. She handles each line with such care, never for a moment lingering too long or overworking any one note, which is exactly why this successfully avoids sounding cheesy and comes across as nothing more than honest and real. It’s even had me close to tears at times, and anything that's had that much of an impact on me doesn’t need much more explaining.
