I love how every is like Frank is being soft just for Mel. But really he's not a harsh guy.

I argue he's just less soft with everyone else - because that's what people expect of him.

I'll give him jaded with a protective streak of "cynicism". But you see him with everyone (except Santos) he takes time to banter and teach. His whole scene with Whitaker losing that patient.

... He's kind. He makes sure to give Javadi her props. Makes the point of using her title where others would insist on using her name due to her age.

He's just a little more open with Mel. Because she's just so different to everyone else. She doesn't banter with him. She's so genuinely herself. Beyond eager. So those built up layers of the man people expect him to be just eases a little more.
