years ago i read a fanfic set in the 80s where a queer character was like “dude it’s 1986, people mind their business nowadays!” to a friend worrying about being caught as gay or something along those lines and. I stopped in my tracks with a thousand yard stare. I remember it to this day. ‘cause like… maybe not as confidently, maybe not about the same things, but yeah people definitely WERE saying things to that effect in 1986. and they said them in 1993 and 1998 too and 2002 and 2015 and 2021 and they’re gonna say it tomorrow. and they’ve surely said things like that far before 1986 and will say them far after 2026. things have been gradually getting better but oh my god they were so bad back then and people thought it was enough. and maybe one day we’re gonna look back at today and think the same thing. and idk maybe we’ll always have hope
