This is an image of a 1500 year old angel oak tree that has been raised and rooted in what is now known as South Carolina. I wonder what tales it could tell of it’s lands lineage. Who came to climb its branches and later piss on its bark? I wonder what light it’s low grown branches were reaching for? April is national poetry month. For those of you who do not know poetry is my home base. It was my greatest passion and livelihood for many years. I learned how to write and think critically in spoken word communities. Some of my greatest loves are spoken word artists and Poets. For the month of April I will be sharing a daily image prompt like this one on my social media. Please consider using the prompts in ways that will best serve your artistic journey. I woke up to a text from my dear femme @throatpuncher reminding that we did this #fatandfree shoot together a year ago. I remember when I first started taking photos of myself and posting them online in 2013. I did it because I had never seen a body like mine represented in mainstream media in ways that were sexy or celebratory. It’s now 2018 and plus size models are actually plus size, large bodied people are designing their own clothing lines, and representation has become a much larger and more nuanced conversation. These days I spend more time infiltrating normative spaces in the spirit of transformation than I do in front of a camera. That said, I do love crewing up with a posse of fierce fat Femmes and feminine presenting women and shaking up what the world (including ourselves) defines as beautiful, desirable, and worthy of glorious expressions of wanting hunger. Thank you @saucyewest for your vision and drive. Thank you @lola__valentine for being such a boss ally and helping me climb back into my power and skin. Thank you @justchamia for living so powerfully in your body and spirit. Thank you @throatpuncher for the reminder that I am fierce and capable of living magic.

One of the most healing choices I have made is to take the time to date myself. Eating alone, traveling alone, dancing alone, learning to love me alone is awakening. All ready to fly #home tomorrow. I feel like I just left home but then I start thinking about the things I've seen and done and some of those seem so long ago too. I'm excited to come home but will miss the relative flexibility of this lifestyle. My little red suitcase has held up, although is slightly shabbier than when we took off.
