the short amount of time wei wuxian has spent with shen wei has been long enough to learn the other was stubborn. perhaps more so than wei wuxian himself. he diverts his attention from the various pieces of parchment and tools that surround him to glance at the other in contemplation, before glancing grudgingly at the soup. admittedly he was hungry after refusing -- rather forgetting to eat several hours ago, far too focused on perfecting the invention he’d been working on before nightless city. “i’m almost finished, i can eat after i’m done...” he raises his hand a moment later, his features as sincere as he can manage, “i promise i will eat soon.”

TRAVELLING ALONE is not Wen Ning’s favorite thing, but since he left Master Wei to find his own path it is his only option. He can’t expect Yuan to travel with him all the time either. They may still be family, but Lan Sizhui has other family now too, other people who rely on him and love him and who want to spend their time with him. It wouldn’t be fair to keep him from them, even if he wanted to, and so Wen Ning accepts the loneliness and endures it with the thought in mind that one day he will get to see him again. Maybe he’ll get to see Wei Wuxian as well, and Lan Wangji, and even Jiang Cheng - and maybe for a little while it’ll feel like it used to be again.

Travelling alone has good sides to it too. There is nothing distracting him from the road ahead and the places he visits. Nothing to make him miss a beautiful bird overhead or a rare flower on the ground. He’s in no RUSH to get anywhere either, free to change his path whenever he feels like it or to dwell for a bit if he finds a spot he likes. And.. most importantly, there’s no one to worry about when he walks straight into the arms of danger.

A bit like right now.

He could be mistaken; he could be misreading the strange energy he started noticing a while ago, but it’s OMINOUS enough he feels compelled to investigate. It leads him through the valley like a scent of something unknown and yet familiar, away from the road and into the green, over mossy stones and through long grass. It fills him with feelings of longing and dread all at once, a strange conflict of emotions. Wen Nin’s steps get faster as the feelings grows stronger, the wet grass leaving drops of water on his clothes, mud sticking to his boots, branches brushing over his cheek and tugging at his hair - until the trees clear and he stops.

He’s not sure what he expected to find, but the little cottage nestled between the trees in front of him does not match the dark aura that attracted him. It looks peaceful, simple but in a way that is made to last ETERNITY. For a moment Wen Ning feels as though he’s reached the end of the world. It’s quiet here, no birds or squirrels to be heard and even the sound of the leaves rustling in the wind carries a strange echo. Maybe Wen Ning should be scared, but all he feels is the ever-growing urge to move closer. With slow steps he walks up to the front door and raises his hand. He hesitates, giving one last thought to who or what might open this door, before he knocks.

1. favourite place in your country? uhm when it comes to cities i really like maastricht, eindhoven and delft ( yes, delft like the blue ) but i basically love anywhere that isn’t de randstad. i love the provinces and towns that tourists don’t really go to. i love the dutch countryside, but i love the province of limburg the most because that shit be home.

7. three words from your native language that you like the most? i’m a big fan of gezellig, which is an untranslatable word which means the feeling of pleasure and comfort that one feels when spending time with other people / that radiates from an atmosphere. cozy comes close, but it just isn’t the same. i love the word geluk because it means both happiness as well as being / getting lucky and if that isn’t a vibe idk what is. and last but not least lieveheersbeestje which is a ladybug, but the direct translation of the name is lovely lord animal and idk that shit is cute as fuck.

10. most enjoyable swear word in your native language? the dutch don’t really swear with words, we swear in sentences. we’re dramatic like that. but if i had to pick it would be takkenwijf which is basically calling someone a bi/tch but it directly translates to branch woman and yeah that’s a vibe

when a god ascended to the immortal city, the clouds parted & the sky shook. when a ghost king ascended to the immortal city, the world quieted. no one even whispered about such cursed presences in their midst; they were far too accustomed to atrocities like these. for the prospect of a good night’s rest, they’d close their eyes & hope they don’t end up in the middle of nowhere in the mortal realm again.

by those standards, didn’t ghosts have the advantage on their home field?

naturally, as the only careful & functional god, mu qing kept his guard up by the deserted entrances, speaking volumes about comfortable arrogance & preferred dread. if anyone wanted to notice him choosing pathing closer to the openings, then they wouldn’t comment.

that didn’t mean he was eager to see a ghost arrive, though. gods & demons weren’t so different when judged on the scale of audacity ... mu qing hmped in front of the ghost king who appeared. one of the less infamous ones, yes, but well-known nonetheless.
