To me, it's understandable why so many people hate Jerry. He's normal. He's mundane. Most characters have some sort of characteristic that is expected of them, that's used to either get the story going, ration or for comedy. Morty's morality (but also pessimism), Summer and Rick's lack of it. Rick's intelligence and wit (beyond other things) and Beth's devotion to Rick (Daddy issues), alcoholism, also being viewed as the parent without flaws (not that she has none, just that she tries to hide them poorly) All these characteristics are held a bit higher than... The average human ones. In a funny situation, a character will fulfill an expected behaviour or go against their normal behaviour and at least is provides comic relief and a chance for viewers to point and go "lol mood" "same". Ex- Beth after shooting Mr. Poopybutthole, her alcoholism was made both an issue and a joke. Jerry being so painstakingly average is annoying at best. He has no dreams or aspirations and thrives in situations where he is simply told what to do and how to live. He has little determination (though being mentally beaten by your Father in law and wife probably does that) and is just...boring. he's the butt of many jokes (rather than source of one) due to how mundane he is but beyond that, Jerry is the average man, and people can probably see reflections of themselves in him... It's hard not to hate him a lil bit.
